Chaozhou’s famed Paifang Street is a 1.95 km pedestrian thoroughfare lined with 23 intricately carved stone archways (paifang), each built to honour historic figures—many successful imperial exam candidates—and local virtues . Rooted in Ming‑Qing traditions, the paifang evoke the city’s cultural pride and architectural elegance .
Set between thuonglight arcade‑style shops, tea‑houses, craft stalls, and snack vendors, the arches form a living corridor blending heritage, daily life, and local commerce .
In 2006–2009, local restoration revived these arches and integrated them with restored quilou buildings—creating a vibrant historical district where residents and visitors co‑exist amid authentic Chaozhou culture .
