Houchigai Shrine is a power spot in Osaka known only to those in the know.
Commonly known as "Houchigai-san," Houchigai Shrine is also known as "Mikuni-ga-oka" (Mikuni Hill) because it is located on the border of the three provinces of Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi. This border between these three provinces (the place name "Sakai" comes from this) is said to be a rare "clear place without direction."
It has long been worshipped as a god of "directional disaster protection," protecting people from directional disasters.
It is said to ward off misfortunes related to direction, topography, house astrology, dates, unlucky years, and other factors, and to bring happiness.
Katatagae, a ritual to ward off evil directions, has been cherished since ancient times.
Be sure to visit this mysterious, directionless, and truly unique place! ✨
Right next to the shrine is the Tadeiyama Kofun, which can be seen from the shrine itself!
According to the shrine's history, on December 29, 90 BC, during the 8th year of Emperor Sujin's reign, Mononobe no Omorosumi no Sukune was sent to Ishizuhara in Kayanui at the request of the emperor to enshrine Susanoo. This is said to be the origin of the shrine's founding.
During the Heian period, the shrine was a stopover point on pilgrimages to Kumano, and people on pilgrimages there would visit and pray for safe travels.
Since then, the shrine has been revered by the imperial samurai and others as a god of protection from disasters. Related documents mention the names of Emperors Nintoku, Kotoku, Kukai, Taira no Kiyomori, Emperor Gotoba, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
