Seigakuin is a temple of the Tozan school of Shugendo located in Sakai Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.
Seigakuin has a history as a training center for Shugendo, as it is recorded as "Yamabushi Seigakuin" in the "Sakai Daiezu" (Great Picture Map of Sakai) from 1689.
The building was constructed in the late Edo period, and was registered as a tangible cultural property of the country in 2002 due to its valuable historical and cultural resources.
It was also used as a temple school "Seikodo" from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period.
Kawaguchi Ekai, who was born in what is now Kitahatago-cho, Sakai City, and was the first Japanese person to cross the Himalayas and enter Tibet, studied here.
The Fudodo Hall is on the left and the gate is on the right.
The Fudodo and the kuri (temple quarters) are integrated in terms of floor plan, but from the outside, the Fudodo section has a higher gable roof, making it appear as an independent building, and the Fudodo, kuri, and gate are all compactly arranged on a very small urban site.
Historically, it is valuable as one of the few surviving buildings related to Shugendo, which was practiced within the city during the Edo period, and is one of the few surviving remains of a temple school in the Sakai moated urban area, and is also important as the only building related to Kawaguchi Ekai.
Shugendo is a uniquely Japanese religion that was born from the fusion of ancient Japanese beliefs and Buddhism, based on mountain worship that originated in Japan.
The principal image is a seated statue of Acala, which can be seen from inside (from the side), and can be worshiped from the front from outside.
