AOAO SAPPORO is a new urban aquarium that opened in July 2023 within the moyuk SAPPORO shopping complex in Sapporo's Chuo Ward. The aquarium's greatest appeal lies in its convenient late-night hours despite its central location, and its sophisticated, adult-oriented atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy the exhibits in an art and lab-like setting.
Its prime location facing Tanukikoji Shopping Street and its open hours until 10 PM (last entry at 9 PM) make it a great place to stop by after sightseeing or shopping, or after work or dinner. The dim lighting throughout the aquarium, combined with the quiet ambient sounds, creates a calming, extraordinary atmosphere, making visitors feel as if they've wandered into a "secret underwater lab."
The exhibits are elaborately designed, including a library-like area where creatures are classified by morphology and ecology, and an immersive space featuring digital art. The penguin exhibit, which allows visitors to get up close and personal with the penguins, is especially popular. This is Hokkaido's first permanent exhibit, and visitors can get up close and personal with the small fairy penguins.
