Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace was truly one of the highlights of our Seoul trip—and definitely a must-do for any first-time visitor to Korea.
From the moment we stepped through the massive gates, we were struck by the grandeur and beauty of the palace grounds. The traditional architecture was stunning, with ornate details, colorful patterns, and beautifully preserved wooden structures. It felt like walking through a living piece of history.
Even without a guided tour, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the palace at our own pace. There was something special about wandering through the wide courtyards, discovering tucked-away pavilions, and taking in the peaceful views of mountains in the background. We especially loved Gyeonghoeru Pavilion—a graceful building perched on a pond that’s perfect for photos.
The atmosphere was lively but not overwhelming. We saw many people dressed in hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), adding to the cultural charm. If you’re wearing hanbok, you even get in free—many rental shops are just outside the palace.
Make sure to catch the changing of the guard ceremony at the main gate if you can. It’s colorful, rhythmic, and offers a glimpse into royal traditions.
Overall, Gyeongbokgung Palace offers a beautiful balance of history, architecture, and Korean culture—and it’s the perfect place to start your journey in Seoul.
