Gankeng Ancient Town – A Living Hakka Heritage in Shenzhen

#discoverchina

Gankeng Ancient Town, also known as “Liangmao Village,” has a history of over 300 years. It gained its name from the traditional craft of weaving Liangmao—a type of bamboo sun hat made by local Hakka people who settled here during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty.

In the 1950s, Gankeng became a major export base for Liangmao hats in Guangdong, with products shipped overseas. However, the craft declined over time. In 2011, Gankeng’s Liangmao weaving was listed as a Shenzhen Intangible Cultural Heritage, and in 2013, it was added to the Guangdong provincial heritage list.
