Lishan Hotel. A Visit to Chian

Lishan Hotel. A Visit to Chiang Kai-shek's Residence

Traveling deep in the mountains along the Central Cross-Island Highway, at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters, stands the majestic Lishan Hotel, the former mountain retreat of President Chiang Kai-shek and his wife. As the car slowly pulls into the complex of red-roofed, white-walled buildings, a sense of solemnity and curiosity arises within the traveler. This place, once a gathering place for political dignitaries, now opens its doors, offering a window into history.

Tucked away within the hotel, Chiang Kai-shek's residence boasts an elegant exterior and interiors that retain their original appearance. The wooden floors reflect the patina of time, and the living room, bedroom, and living area all exude a 1950s atmosphere. Most striking is the boundless mountain vista beyond the window: Chiang Kai-shek gazed out from here, perhaps contemplating state affairs or seeking a moment of peace in the tranquility of the mountains.

As the guide walks, travelers can see the bedroom once occupied by his wife, Soong Mei-ling, and the simple details of their home. Although this place was once a symbol of power, the space does not appear luxurious, but rather has the solemnity and coolness of a high mountain inn.
