Ascend Liugong Island: Half vast mountains and seas, half echoes of history
At the mouth of Weihai Bay, there is an island that holds the profound chapters of modern Chinese history, and also holds the clear scenery of the Jiaodong Peninsula—that is Liugong Island.
Take a ferry to the island, and the salty sea breeze brushes through your hair. Weihai Port in the distance gradually shrinks, and the outline of the island before you becomes clearer. The first step upon landing on the island is to visit the Sino-Japanese War Museum. Yellowed letters, rusty cannonballs, and wax figures recreating historical scenes quietly tell the tragic story of a century ago. Standing in the courtyard of the Beiyang Fleet Admiral's Office, amidst the blue bricks and gray tiles, you can almost hear the commands of the past, and the carvings on the pillars hide the patriotic sentiments of old times.
If you want a change of pace, go for a hike around the island. The wooden boardwalks of the National Forest Park wind through lush greenery, with rustling pine waves, and occasionally squirrels darting past your feet. At the Qiding Mountain Battery Ruins, ancient cannons face the boundless sea. When you climb high and look out, the blue sky, turquoise sea, and islands merge into one line, making every casual shot a magnificent seascape.
Family fun is also hidden here. In the Panda House, plump pandas munching on bamboo always bring out crisp laughter from children. In the Liugong Island Expo Park, interactive exhibits bring history to life. When a child points at a wax figure and asks, "Who is this?", it's the best moment for popular science education.
In the evening, head to the pier to watch a sunset. The orange-red glow of the sunset fills the sky, reflecting off the shimmering sea. The returning ferry sounds its whistle, carrying away the island's stories and scenery. This trip to Liugong Island is not just about seeing mountains and gazing at the sea; it's also a gentle encounter with a piece of history.
