Nestled in the town of Yasugi-shi, Shimane Prefecture (320 Furukawa-chō), the Adachi Museum of Art blends modern Japanese painting with one of Japan’s most celebrated gardens. Established in 1970 by entrepreneur Zenko Adachi, the museum houses an exceptional collection of paintings—particularly more than 120 works by the renowned artist Yokoyama Taikan.
What truly sets this museum apart is its vast garden, spanning around 165,000 m² and featuring multiple styles—from dry-landscape (karesansui) to moss garden, white gravel and pine garden, pond garden and waterfall. The garden has been consistently ranked Japan’s top Japanese garden by Sukiya Living Magazine for two decades and receives a three-star rating from the Michelin Green Guide Japan.
Visiting the Adachi Museum of Art offers a serene and artful escape. It’s open year-round with hours from 9:00–17:30 (April–September) and 9:00–17:00 (October–March). Adult admission is ¥2,500 (with discounts available for international guests). Plan to spend at least 2 hours to appreciate both the gallery and the gardens. If you like, I can check how to reach it from JR Matsue Station, current special exhibitions, or best times of year to visit for garden photography.
