The yearning for Tiananmen Square is a seed that every Chinese has sown deep in their hearts since childhood, but Beijing was too far away when I was young, and it could only be a dream in my heart. It was not until many years after I started working that I went to Beijing for the first time. Thanks to the social development and technological advancement of our great motherland, traveling to and from Beijing has become an easy task, leaving early and returning late. So I hope that the next generation can realize their longing for Tiananmen Square as soon as possible. During the National Day holiday in 2021, taking advantage of the temporary stabilization of the domestic epidemic, I took my family to the capital Beijing.
October 2nd
Beijing in October should have been sunny and refreshing in autumn, but the National Day holiday in 2021 was rainy in Beijing, and the five-day tour of the capital began with the drizzle of autumn rain. It was already noon when we arrived in Beijing by high-speed rail. We booked accommodation at the Tangla Hotel, across from the National Museum of China on West Chang'an Avenue. After settling in, we headed straight to Tiananmen Square with the kids. We wandered from Tiananmen Square, through Tiananmen Square, to Qianmen, and then to Dashilan, stopping here and there along the way. It was a brief glimpse into the charm of old Beijing.
October 3rd
I had planned to visit the Forbidden City today. I don’t know if it’s because of the weather or the epidemic, but there are not as many tourists in the Forbidden City as I imagined.
It started to drizzle when we arrived at Qianqingmen Square.
Lunch was eaten in the cold palace of the Forbidden City.
I got to eat the Forbidden City Cultural Museum ice cream that I had been craving for.
After coming out of Shenwu Gate, I walked quite a distance before I got a taxi. We planned to go to Niujie for hotpot in the evening. But when we got there, we found that Niujie was packed. We couldn't get a table for hotpot, so we had to eat some Beijing snacks at Hongji Snack Shop.
October 3
We went to the Temple of Heaven Park in the morning.
After leaving the Temple of Heaven, we took a taxi to the nearest Jubaoyuan to eat mutton hot pot, which tasted really good.
In the afternoon, we visited Beihai Park in a light rain.
Today's plan was to visit the China Science and Technology Museum. I booked tickets online the day before arriving in Beijing for the full-screen cinema, giant-screen cinema, and moving cinema.
We had dinner at Huguosi Snacks in Gulou. It was my first time trying Beijing soy milk. After taking a sip, I finally knew what it tasted like, haha!
October 5th
On my last day in Beijing, I took the high-speed train at around 3pm and went to the Summer Palace in the morning. It was also my first time to the Summer Palace.
The rain was still falling and the temperature was getting lower, but I only brought a short-sleeved shirt and a skin-protecting top.
The kids weren't wearing much, and their shoes and socks were soaked. They were shivering as they left the Summer Palace.
We took the subway back to the hotel, grabbed our luggage, and rushed to the high-speed rail station without stopping—just in time. Just as the high-speed train started, the weather in Beijing cleared up, and for the first time in days, the sun peeked out. Goodbye Beijing, see you again another day.
