[New Yunnan Notes] Dounan Flower Market and Dounan Wetland: A Dreamlike Encounter of Blooming Flowers and Nature

After reuniting with the nimble seagulls at Haigeng Park, I eagerly headed to the Dounan Flower Market, a dreamlike place surrounded by blooms, embodying countless people's yearning for romance and beauty.

Located in Dounan Town, Chenggong District, Kunming, the Dounan Flower Market shines like a shimmering pearl on the floral landscape of China and even Asia, earning it the nickname "Flower Capital of Asia." Founded in 1998, the market covers approximately 1,020 mu (approximately 666 acres) with a planned total construction area of approximately 810,000 square meters. It is a comprehensive floral kingdom integrating flower auctions, international trade, logistics, inspection, and processing. The market boasts clearly defined zones. In the wholesale area, merchants busily select bulk goods, delivering vibrant colors to the region. The retail area, a warm and romantic atmosphere, allows every visitor to easily take home their favorite flowers for a cherished collection. Back in the 1980s, this market, now known as the Asian Flower Trading Center and Asia's largest fresh cut flower market, was just a beginning. Since then, it has continuously supplied fresh cut flowers to the nation, bringing the fragrance of the four seasons to every corner. Kunming, renowned as the "City of Spring," owes much of its romance to flowers. The perennially spring-like climate acts as a gentle guardian, ensuring the city is graced with flowers year-round. Flowers bloom profusely in the streets and alleys, and vendors selling flowers can be found everywhere. The most vibrant gathering place for these blossoms is undoubtedly the Dounan Flower Market.

I still remember what the great writer Yang Shuo wrote in his poem "Ode to Camellia": "As soon as I set foot in Kunming, my heart was intoxicated." And the moment I stepped into Dounan, my heart wasn't intoxicated, but rather confused, disturbed by the overwhelming romance and beauty. It's true that as soon as I set foot in Dounan, my heart was in turmoil!

What a vast and charming flower market!

Wandering through, the rich fragrance of flowers enveloped me like a soft veil. The entire market seemed like an overturned palette, a dazzling array of vibrant colors. I was instantly lost in this sea of blossoms. The voluptuous roses resemble the eyes of a lover, blazing with passion and deep affection; the elegant lilies are like fairies descended to earth, exuding an otherworldly aura; and the carnations exude a gentle warmth, like a mother's warm embrace. There are also hydrangeas, phalaenopsis, hyacinths, and even the colorful wintersweets rarely seen in Guangzhou. Even pure white cotton has been transformed into a uniquely charming "flower" here. The variety is countless, each blossom blooming to its fullest, vying for attention with all its splendor. Even more surprising is the surprisingly affordable prices of flowers here, sold by the pound! The local saying, "Yunnan's Eighteen Wonders: Flowers Sold by the Pound," vividly captures this unique phenomenon.

Who in the world can resist the allure of flowers? When people gently hold a bouquet of flowers, happiness and joy bloom like the warm spring sun, freely on everyone's face. In Yunnan, a paradise on earth where flowers bloom all year round, flowers have long been integrated into every aspect of people's lives. Appreciating flowers, decorating their lives with them, and enjoying delicious dishes made with them—everything is so natural and pleasant. Buying and selling flowers is like everyday life, making flower freedom a dream. The flower market is divided into seven distinct areas: the Main Venue, the Flower Boutique Pavilion, the Flower City Souvenir Pavilion, the Life Art Pavilion, the Family Experience Pavilion, the Kunming Flower City Ocean World, and the Carnation Trading Area. Here, the charm of flowers is on full display, allowing visitors to enjoy, buy, arrange, and even savor the delicacies of flowers. The first floor alone was breathtaking. As someone who hails from the Flower City, I was truly astonished, my jaw dropping. Due to time constraints, I didn't have time to explore the second, third, and fourth floors. While this filled me with regret, it also planted the seeds of anticipation for my next visit. In other cities, it's hard to find the down-to-earth and exhilarating feeling of visiting the Kunming flower market. Even in Guangzhou, the Flower City, the bustling flower market during the Spring Festival every year is just the tip of the iceberg compared to the Dounan Flower Market.

The Dounan Flower Market is densely packed with stalls, one next to the other. The constant clamor of shouting, hawking, and bargaining intertwines. While it's clearly a romantic experience accompanied by flowers, it also strangely gives people a sense of the down-to-earth, everyday life, as if this is the most authentic form of life, ordinary yet beautiful.

The people wandering through the flower market range from individual shoppers simply searching for a bouquet of their choice to large wholesalers shouldering the heavy responsibility of purchasing. This palace of flowers seems to pulse with bustle and bustle day and night, overflowing with vitality and energy.

It's said that Kunming feels like spring all year round, and Dounan is undoubtedly the place in Kunming that most embodies the spirit of spring. Pink carnations are as gentle as a young girl's thoughts; red roses passionately express the fervor of love; yellow sunflowers, facing the sun, are filled with hope and vitality; chrysanthemums, lisianthus, baby's breath, and more, along with a dazzling array of potted plants, greenery, and floral merchandise. These graceful blossoms are spring's most affectionate and romantic love letter to nature.

The Dounan Flower Market offers a diverse range of trading models, including auctions, peer-to-peer transactions, and e-commerce platforms, catering to the needs of diverse demographics. Trading continues 24/7, and the nighttime market is particularly busy, running from 8 PM to 2 AM. Illuminated by the lights, the flowers appear even more vibrant, and trading enthusiasm intensifies.

The Dounan Flower Market is not only a core hub for China's flower trade but also a crucial indicator of flower prices in Asia. It is Yunnan's shining and vibrant image, serving as a solid bridge connecting people and nature, culture and economy. Through these small flowers, the world can come to know Yunnan and experience the charm of nature and the beauty of life.

With today's rapid technological advancements, the Dounan Flower Market is keeping pace and actively incorporating modern technology. Intelligent management and green cultivation techniques are widely used here. By incorporating IoT technology and big data analytics, the growing environment of fresh flowers in the market is monitored in real time, effectively utilizing resources and reducing waste, ensuring that every flower thrives in the optimal environment.

Not far from the Dounan Flower Market lies a tranquil haven—the Dounan Wetland. I had assumed that the Dounan Flower Market had already captivated me, so surely the Dounan Wetland would be equally stunning. The vibrant hydrangeas in the video especially piqued my interest, and so, filled with longing, I journeyed to the wetland.

According to online information, the Dounan Wetland covers 1,079.98 mu (approximately 1,079.98 mu) and perfectly preserves the historical landscape of the willow-lined embankment of Dianchi Lake, a scene reminiscent of the memories of old Kunming residents. The area is lush with trees and abundant flowers, including lavender, sunflowers, and cosmos. Every summer, the hydrangeas within the wetland burst into bloom, creating a sea of blossoms. A leisurely stroll along the 2-kilometer-long willow embankment near Dianchi Lake offers picturesque views, with the majestic Xishan Mountain in the distance and the shimmering waters of Dianchi Lake up close, allowing you to feel the gentle soothing touch of nature.

In addition to its captivating natural scenery, the Dounan Wetland boasts an antique building, the Dounan Academy, a historical and cultural site in Kunming. Today, the academy has been converted into a teahouse, where visitors can enjoy a cup of fragrant tea, discuss past and present, and experience the profound charm of traditional culture. The wetland also houses a scenic area called the Dounan Flower City, showcasing a variety of rare flowers, bonsai, potted plants, and floral artwork. Here, visitors can delve into Yunnan's rich and diverse floral culture and admire a variety of exquisite floral sculptures and artworks. However, when I actually stepped onto the wetland, the scene before me was different from what I had imagined. I could indeed gaze upon the majestic scenery of Xishan Mountain in the distance and the vast shimmering waters of Dianchi Lake up close. Dianchi's waters are vast and boundless, and visitors can take boat trips to explore a small corner of the lake. The riverbanks were lush with reeds and water plants, and the trees were also dense. But the flowers I had been longing for were missing. I asked fellow travelers returning home if there were any hydrangeas ahead, but they replied: "We've walked the entire way and haven't seen any." When I asked again where the flowers were, they also said they hadn't seen any. It seems I had come at the wrong time after all, and had been deceived by the photos. No wonder people often say photos are deceptive. Just like when I was at Haigeng Dam, I didn't see the joyful scene of people interacting with seagulls as depicted in the photos. Fortunately, Haigeng Park made up for this regret, otherwise it would have been a huge regret.

The Dounan Wetland, once covered in hydrangeas in those photos, is now reduced to green grass and trees. Compared to the vibrant and bustling Dounan Flower Market, the two pale in comparison. But perhaps this is also part of travel: the anticipation, the surprises, and the small disappointments. It is these diverse experiences that make up a rich and varied journey, filling one with even more imagination and anticipation for the next encounter.
