Introducing Tianbo Yangfu

The Tianbo Yang Mansion in China is the residence of Yang Ye, a national hero who fought against the Liao Dynasty during the Northern Song Dynasty. It is located beside the Jinshui River at Tianbo Gate in the northwest corner of the Northern Song capital, Dongjing (present-day Kaifeng), hence the name "Tianbo Yang Mansion." Because Yang Ye was devoted to his country and his family had been loyal for generations, Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, admired his integrity and upright character, and his unwillingness to flatter. He pardoned him and built a Wuwang Mansion by the Jinshui River at Tianbo Gate, granting him five million yuan in cash for the "Qingfeng Wuwang Tianbo Dishui Tower." He personally inscribed the plaque "Tianbo Yang Mansion." Located on the north bank of Yangjia Lake in the northwest corner of Kaifeng, the Tianbo Yang Mansion covers an area of 2.6 hectares. It was rebuilt in a Song Dynasty style in 1992 and converted into a park in 1994.

The Tianbo Yang Mansion comprises three courtyards: East, West, and Central. Covering 3.3 hectares, the main buildings include the Yang Family Mansion, the Yang Family Garden, and the Parade Ground. Its architectural specifications were adapted to the standards of a first-rank military officer, consistent with Yang Ye's appointments as Grand Marshal and Jiedushi of Datong. Located on the north bank of West Lake, Yang Family Mansion borders the Six Dynasties Imperial Palace Dragon Pavilion Scenic Area to the east and the Qingming Shanghe Garden to the west. It is a classic example of a Song Dynasty-style classical garden.

The Yang Family Mansion's main building, the central courtyard, is located in the Tianbo Yang Mansion. It features the main gate, screen wall, bell and drum tower, hall, Tianbo Tower, east and west side halls, rear hall, and corridors. Extensive exhibits include sculptures of the Yang Family Generals, a temple dedicated to Lady She, and Yang Family weapons. Inside the hall are large sculptures praising the Yang Family Generals' loyalty to their country and the Xiaoyan Shrine dedicated to them. The main building, Tianbo Tower, was gifted to Yang Ye by Emperor Taizong of Song as the "Clear Wind and No Incorrupt Tianbo Dripping Water Tower." The first-floor hall, where Yang Ye handled military affairs, features a sculpture depicting "Yang Ye Dispatches Troops to Youzhou to Rescue His Lordship." The second-floor sculpture depicts "Lady She and the Yang Family Select Generals."

Climate and best time to travel

Boasting a warm temperate continental monsoon climate, this area boasts a group of sculptures depicting the patriotic fervor of the Yang family: Yang Linggong with the Golden Sword, Qilang's expedition to Youzhou, Dalang attending a banquet on his lord's behalf, and Liulang leading the army to battle Han Chang. Other sculptures depicting female generals include Lady She, fire-making maid Yang Paifeng, Qi Niang's battle against Ma Twain, the Eighth Sister and the Ninth Sister defeating Yelü Qi, and Mu Guiying's destruction of the Tianmen Formation. The Xiaoyan Temple, located behind Tianbo Tower, is the Yang family ancestral temple and a sacrificial hall granted by Emperor Taizong of Song. It is a suitable place for a visit in all seasons.
