Henan University (Henan University), abbreviated as "Heda," is a university jointly established by the Henan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. In 1912, Lin Boxiang and other Henan educators founded the Henan Preparatory School for Studying in Europe and America (the predecessor of Henan University) on the site of the former National Imperial Examination Hall in Kaifeng during the Qing Dynasty. In 1923, General Feng Yuxiang expanded it into Zhongzhou University, with two departments, liberal arts and science. In 1927, it was rebuilt into the National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University, adding the departments of agriculture, law, and medicine. In 1930, it was first named Henan University. In 1942, with the support of Mr. Yu Youren and others, it was renamed National Henan University. In 1948, some teachers and students of the school, with the support of Comrade Deng Xiaoping and Comrade Chen Yi, then secretaries of the Central Plains Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, established Zhongyuan University. In 1952, after adjustments to its departments and faculties, it went through stages such as Henan Normal College and Henan Normal University. In 1984, the name Henan University was restored.

As of February 2019, Henan University has a total campus area of ​​2.2 million square meters, with a building area of ​​1.47 million square meters. It offers 97 undergraduate majors, 43 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 24 types of master's professional degree authorization categories, 20 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, and 15 postdoctoral research stations. It has more than 4,300 faculty and staff, including 14 full-time and part-time academicians. It has 50,000 full-time students, including nearly 10,000 graduate students and 500 international students.
