Is a tour of Waterhole Canyon a reasonable substitute for an Antelope Canyon tour? We will be driving from south rim of Grand Canyon to Page. I was originally planning to drive directly to Antelope Canyon for a mid day tour, but now am thinking of sidetracking to Vermillion Cliffs (at least to Lee's Ferry and the Navajo bridge) and found Waterhole Canyon. Thanks for any advice.
Waterhole Canyon and Antelope Canyon are both slot canyons in northern Arizona, but they offer very different experiences. Whether Waterhole Canyon is a reasonable substitute depends on what you are hoping to get from your visit.
Antelope Canyon is world-famous for its narrow passageways, dramatic light beams, and smooth, wave-like sandstone walls. It is divided into Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon tours, both guided by Navajo guides, and is highly photogenic. Midday tours are especially prized for the light beams in Upper Antelope Canyon.
Waterhole Canyon, located near Page and part of the Vermilion Cliffs area, is smaller, less crowded, and typically less commercialized. It’s not as dramatic in terms of light beams and depth, but it offers a quieter, more intimate canyon experience and can be combined with scenic stops like Lee’s Ferry and the Navajo Bridge.
If your priority is to see the classic Antelope Canyon experience with famous light beams and dramatic slot walls, Waterhole Canyon is not a full substitute. However, if you prefer a quieter, less touristy slot canyon experience and want to include additional scenic stops along the Vermilion Cliffs and Lee’s Ferry area, Waterhole Canyon is a good alternative.
In practical terms, if you are driving from the South Rim to Page and want to maximize sightseeing without strict scheduling, you could consider:
Overall, Waterhole Canyon is a reasonable alternative for those who want a slot canyon experience without the crowds of Antelope Canyon, but it does not fully replicate the iconic photographic and visual impact of Antelope Canyon.
