Sleeper train advice

Hi all

I have plans to travel from Shanghai to Beijing and then Beijing to Xi’an during my upcoming stay in Sep 23, with my husband. I want to make one of these a sleeper train experience. I would prefer the deluxe sleeper where we have more privacy and our own toilet. I can’t find any reliable information on the sleeper train types available and the ticket types. On Trip.com, I see ‘premier soft sleeper’ and ‘first class sleeper’ and am confused as to what these are and whether they meet my requirement.

Pls share any tips.

P.S. I already received multiple helpful tips from this forum and am grateful to all that contributed. My itinerary is shaping well

Traveling by sleeper train in China is a popular way to cover long distances while experiencing local rail travel. For your planned routes—Shanghai to Beijing and Beijing to Xi’an—there are several options for overnight trains, including high-speed and conventional sleeper trains.

Types of Sleepers

  • Soft Sleeper: Enclosed compartments with 4 berths (2 upper, 2 lower). Compartments can be locked, providing privacy. Shared toilet facilities at the end of the carriage.
  • Deluxe Soft Sleeper / First-Class Sleeper: Usually 2-berth compartments, more spacious, better bedding, and some trains offer a private toilet within the compartment. This is closest to what most travelers consider a “deluxe” experience.
  • Hard Sleeper: Open compartments with 6 berths (3 upper, 3 lower). Cheaper but less private and more basic.
  • Premier Soft Sleeper: Exclusive to certain high-speed overnight trains. Usually 2-berth compartments with a higher level of privacy, comfortable bedding, and in some cases, a private bathroom or washroom. These are limited and must be booked in advance.

Booking Tips

  • Use official platforms or reputable agencies like Trip.com, Ctrip, or 12306.cn. Make sure you check for “deluxe soft sleeper” or “premier soft sleeper” options.
  • Book as early as possible—especially for September—since these premium sleepers sell out quickly.
  • Check the train type: High-speed overnight trains (D and G series) sometimes only have first-class and second-class seats, while conventional overnight trains (Z, T, and K series) often offer deluxe or soft sleepers.
  • Confirm amenities: Not all “first-class sleeper” labels guarantee a private toilet. Read the description carefully or contact the agency for confirmation.

Route Advice

  • Shanghai to Beijing: Consider taking a high-speed daytime train (G-series) for speed and comfort, then use an overnight train from Beijing to Xi’an for the sleeper experience.
  • Beijing to Xi’an: Conventional Z-series trains are ideal for sleeper experience. Check if deluxe or premier soft sleeper cabins are available for private 2-berth compartments.

Overall, for the most privacy and comfort, aim for a 2-berth deluxe soft sleeper or premier soft sleeper on a conventional overnight train. Make your bookings early, verify compartment amenities, and prepare for a cozy and authentic Chinese rail experience.
