Transport to hotel and mobile SIM

Hi,

Looking forward to returning to HK after 5 years.

I am staying this time at Eco tree hotel Causeway Bay (between Tin Hau and Fortress Hill I believe). I have always used the AirPort Express on previous visits and used the hotel shuttle bus service from HK station. I have not stayed at this particular hotel before and wonder what is the most convenient way to travel from the airport, arriving about 5.30pm. Well versed with the MTR but not so with bus service. I know the hotel shuttle bus service is very much reduced now from pre-Covid days and doesn’t cover this hotel.

Secondly, I have looked at the data package that my provider (EE) offer and it’s about 74hkd per day (I will be there for 14 days). Any advice on a local sim? Don’t use for streaming or anything just for google etc as will have Wi-Fi in hotel.

Thank you in advance.

For traveling from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to Eco Tree Hotel in Causeway Bay, there are several convenient options. Since the hotel shuttle service is not available, the easiest way is via the MTR (Airport Express) combined with a short taxi or walk:

  • Option 1: Airport Express + MTR: Take the Airport Express from HKIA to Hong Kong Station (about 24 minutes). From there, transfer to the Tung Chung Line towards Hong Kong and then transfer to the Island Line at Central or Admiralty Station to reach Tin Hau or Fortress Hill Station. The hotel is within walking distance from either station.
  • Option 2: Direct Taxi: You can take a taxi directly from the airport to the hotel. This is more expensive (around HKD 350–400) but convenient, especially if you have luggage or are traveling with others.
  • Option 3: Airport Bus: Bus A11 runs from the airport to North Point or Causeway Bay. From there, you can take a short taxi ride or walk to the hotel. This option is cheaper but slower and less convenient if you have heavy luggage.

Regarding mobile connectivity, using your UK EE data package at HKD 74 per day for 14 days can be expensive. A local SIM card is generally more cost-effective for basic internet usage:

  • Local SIM card: You can buy a prepaid Hong Kong SIM card at the airport, convenience stores, or mobile carrier shops (e.g., CSL, 1010, SmarTone). For light use (Google Maps, messaging, browsing), a 10–15-day plan with 3–5GB of data should suffice, typically costing HKD 100–150.
  • Octopus Card: While primarily for transport, some Octopus cards allow topping up for mobile payments and small purchases, but not for data usage.
  • Wi-Fi: Since your hotel provides Wi-Fi, you can mainly rely on it and use mobile data sparingly.

Summary: The most convenient airport-to-hotel option is taking the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, then MTR to Tin Hau or Fortress Hill, and walking to Eco Tree Hotel. For mobile internet, purchasing a local prepaid SIM is cheaper than using your UK plan daily for 14 days.
