Bank ATMs that don’t charge for withdrawals?

Hi, I have Mastercard and visa UK bank cards. Are there any banks in Hong Kong that do not charge for withdrawals from their ATMs. My banks in the UK doesn’t charge for foreign withdrawals

Thanks

In Hong Kong, most ATMs operated by local banks will allow international Mastercard or Visa card withdrawals. However, whether you are charged depends on both your home bank and the local bank operating the ATM.

Local ATM fees:

  • HSBC, Standard Chartered, Hang Seng Bank, Bank of China (Hong Kong), and Citibank Hong Kong all have ATMs widely available in the city.
  • Most Hong Kong banks do not charge extra fees for withdrawals using foreign Mastercard or Visa cards at their ATMs. However, some banks may levy a small service fee (typically HKD 20–30) depending on your card network or type of account.
  • Some convenience store ATMs (e.g., 7-Eleven via E.SUN or other networks) may charge a fee, so it is better to use major bank ATMs for withdrawals.

Tips for minimizing fees:

  • Withdraw larger amounts at once to reduce multiple transaction fees.
  • Check if your UK bank explicitly mentions partner banks in Hong Kong that allow fee-free withdrawals.
  • ATM screens usually indicate the fee before confirming the withdrawal, so you can cancel if it charges.
  • Consider using HSBC or Standard Chartered ATMs, as these banks have historically not charged foreign cards for withdrawals and are widely available.

In summary, while minor fees may occasionally apply, using ATMs from major Hong Kong banks with your UK Mastercard or Visa is generally straightforward and usually free of local withdrawal charges.
