Parking at Footprint Center
I will be visiting Phoenix and plan to buy tickets for Suns game in Apr next year via Ticketmaster. There is an option to pre-pay parking at Footprint Center for $30 or next street for $25.
I am hesitating whether to get it or do the Park and Ride on Light Rail at Metro Center (Dunlop Street near my accommodation ). Weighing between the heavy traffic in downtown Phoenix on games day vs the long ride on the Light Rail. I also read there are safety concerns on the rail, especially considering the ride back at night after the game.
I would like to hear your views please. Thanks.
When deciding between pre-paying for parking at Footprint Center or using the Park and Ride/Light Rail, there are several factors to weigh: convenience, cost, safety, and time.
If you pre-pay for parking:
- Parking at Footprint Center ($30) or nearby streets ($25) is very convenient and guarantees you a spot, which is important on game days when downtown traffic and parking demand are high.
- You’ll save time compared to taking public transit, since you won’t have to wait for trains or deal with transfers.
- Walking to and from your car is straightforward, and you avoid the potential safety concerns associated with late-night Light Rail travel.
- The main drawback is cost and potential downtown traffic delays before and after the game.
If you use Park and Ride and the Light Rail:
- It is cheaper than parking downtown, depending on the distance you drive to the rail station.
- During peak game days, Light Rail trains can be crowded, particularly when returning after the game.
- Some travelers have noted safety concerns on the Light Rail late at night, though incidents are relatively rare.
- It adds more transit time, including walking to and from stations, waiting for trains, and navigating downtown.
Other considerations:
- If you value convenience and a stress-free return after the game, pre-paying for parking is usually worth it.
- If budget is a bigger concern and you’re comfortable navigating public transit and crowds, Light Rail is a feasible alternative.
- Arriving early can help you avoid the worst traffic, regardless of which option you choose.
- Checking real-time traffic apps and Light Rail schedules on game day can help you plan the smoothest route.
Overall, for first-time visitors or those concerned about safety and minimizing hassle after the game, pre-paid parking at Footprint Center or nearby lots is often the more practical choice.
