March crowds
We had planned to visit the 3rd week of March mainly just looking at hiking all week. We are traveling from the east coast, but from what I'm reading, it seems like crowds are huge in March. Is it so bad on the hiking trails, that you wouldn't even suggest making the trip during that time of year?
Visiting Sedona in the third week of March can indeed bring more crowds than during the quieter months, but it’s generally not overwhelming on the hiking trails if you plan carefully. March is a popular time because the weather is mild, with daytime temperatures often in the 60s–70s°F (15–24°C), making it ideal for hiking, and spring break for many schools can add to local traffic.
Here are some details and tips regarding hiking and crowds:
- Main trailheads: Popular trails such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Devil’s Bridge, and West Fork Trail can see significant numbers of hikers, especially mid-morning to early afternoon.
- Trail congestion: The trails are not usually packed to the point of being uncomfortable, but you will likely encounter groups, and parking at trailheads can fill quickly.
- Timing: To avoid crowds, start hikes early in the morning (7–8 a.m.) or later in the afternoon. Early mornings tend to be peaceful, and the light is excellent for photography.
- Alternative trails: Consider less-trafficked hikes such as Doe Mountain, Fay Canyon, or Bear Mountain (more strenuous) for a more solitary experience.
Additional suggestions:
- Weekdays are generally less busy than weekends, so align your hiking days accordingly if possible.
- Arrive early at popular trailheads to secure parking, especially for Devil’s Bridge and Cathedral Rock.
- March is a shoulder season for hotels, so accommodations in Sedona are easier to find than in peak summer months.
- Be prepared for variable weather; March can still have cool mornings and occasional rain.
Overall, a March trip is still very worthwhile. While you will encounter other hikers, with early starts and some lesser-known trails, you can enjoy the scenery and hikes without feeling overwhelmed by crowds. The mild weather makes it one of the best months for active exploration.
