Umbrella rentals
We are coming in July, staying at the South end. Are umbrella rentals available on the beach? We will have our 3 small grandchildren with us. If not, are we allowed to set up a big shaded area?
Yes, umbrella rentals are available on Tybee Island's beaches, particularly near the popular South End, which is the most developed and family-friendly area of the island. Many of the beachfront rental companies offer umbrellas, chairs, and other beach equipment for rent. These are typically available in designated beach zones, especially near public access points.
- Umbrella Rentals:
- Several local rental companies set up umbrella and chair stations along the beach. Most of these rentals are set up for you upon arrival, and you can reserve them in advance, especially during busy months like July.
- These rentals are often placed in marked areas, so you'll have a spot to stay cool and shaded while keeping an eye on your children as they play.
- The rentals usually include a chair, umbrella, and sometimes a small table, but you can also rent additional items if needed (such as extra chairs, beach toys, etc.).
If you'd prefer more flexibility or want a larger shaded area, you can bring your own umbrellas or pop-up tents to set up on the beach. However, there are a few rules to keep in mind:
- Setting Up Your Own Shade:
- You are allowed to bring your own umbrellas, tents, and other shade structures, but these must be set up in accordance with local beach regulations. There are restrictions on the size and placement of large tents or structures to ensure they do not block beach access or interfere with others.
- Typically, you are allowed to set up your personal shade structure in non-rented areas, but it should not obstruct the view or the path along the beach. Make sure to leave space for others to walk and enjoy the beach as well.
- If you're bringing a large tent, check the guidelines for Tybee Island, as there may be limits on tent size (usually 10x10 feet is the maximum allowed). Tents should also be securely anchored due to the winds that can occasionally pick up on the island.
Given you're traveling with small children, renting an umbrella and a couple of chairs might be a more convenient option, especially if you're looking for easy access to shade and don't want to worry about setting up a large structure. Renting also eliminates the need to bring extra gear with you, and it ensures you're in a designated area that's safe and well-maintained.
In any case, whether you choose to rent or bring your own shade, Tybee's South End beach is a great place for families, with plenty of space and amenities to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable!
