Looking for dog-friendly & scenic locales along coastline

I live in the Seattle, WA area and am looking to plan a road trip down into California this September with my senior-aged dog. My only true criteria are:

- dog friendly hotel (with strong preference for nicer/more luxurious places)

- somewhere scenic (WA's coastline is not my cup of tea - I need a change of pace)

- no further south than the Monterey area - but literally can be anywhere from the Oregon-California border all the way down to that general vicinity - I can't put my pup through more than a max 15 hour drive.

I'm 100% ignorant as to good regions, good spots...despite living in the PNW my whole life I know very little about the CA coastline.

Thank you!

Driving from the Seattle area down the Northern California coastline offers some truly scenic options that are quite different from the typical gray, forested Pacific Northwest coast. Since you want dog-friendly accommodations and a more luxurious experience, as well as beautiful coastal views, there are several excellent stops to consider along your route within a roughly 15-hour drive limit.

Some recommended regions and towns along the California coast up to Monterey include:

  • Humboldt County / Arcata & Trinidad: The northern California coastline here is rugged and dramatic, with redwood forests and striking ocean cliffs. You can find upscale inns and boutique hotels that are dog-friendly. Many beaches in this area also allow dogs off-leash or on leash, providing scenic walks.
  • Mendocino: A quintessential Northern California coastal town with charming inns and bed-and-breakfasts, many of which are pet-friendly. The coastline here is dramatic, with cliffs, hidden coves, and quaint coastal villages. Mendocino Headlands State Park and nearby beaches provide excellent scenic walks with your dog.
  • Bodega Bay / Sonoma Coast: Just over two hours north of San Francisco, this area offers luxurious coastal lodges and hotels that welcome dogs. The Sonoma Coast State Park has miles of scenic beaches and bluffs. This area is more mellow and has a mix of rugged coastline and small coastal towns.
  • Point Reyes / Marin County: Slightly inland from the Pacific Highway, Point Reyes National Seashore offers stunning coastal vistas, hiking trails, and dog-friendly areas (mostly on-leash). Nearby luxury inns and boutique hotels allow for a relaxing stay with your pup.
  • Santa Cruz / Monterey area: The southernmost part of your intended drive. The Santa Cruz coastline has dog-friendly beaches, and Carmel-by-the-Sea is extremely dog-friendly, with many hotels, restaurants, and beaches welcoming pets. Monterey and Carmel both have upscale accommodations, boutique hotels, and scenic walking paths along the coast.

Tips for a dog-friendly coastal road trip:

  • Book accommodations in advance, especially dog-friendly upscale hotels, as availability can be limited.
  • Check each beach and park for dog regulations, as some areas require leashes or restrict access during certain seasons.
  • Consider breaking the drive into two days to avoid stressing your senior dog; for example, you could stop overnight in Mendocino or the Sonoma Coast if you want a more relaxed pace.
  • Plan for scenic stops along the way: viewpoints, coastal hikes, and small towns can make the drive enjoyable without overtaxing your dog.

Overall, if you want a mix of luxury, dog-friendliness, and stunning scenery, Mendocino, Bodega Bay, and Carmel-by-the-Sea are standout options along the Northern and Central California coast for a September road trip with your pup.
