California Winerys, Highway 101 Road Tripping - help please
Santa Barbara to Mendocino, CA: Robler, Scheid, Cakebread, Caymus, Silver Oak winerys.... I have considered these. Probably going to be my ONLY California winery experience ever, so I must decide whether to reroute through Napa Valley. My preference is bold Cabernets. I'm a very casual person but willing to meet driving, dress and money requirements for the worthy experience. Thank you.
If your main focus is bold Cabernet Sauvignon and this is likely your only California winery experience, you’ll want to weigh the differences between the coastal Highway 101 route through Santa Barbara and Mendocino versus a detour to Napa Valley.
Highway 101 / Coastal Route:
- Santa Barbara: The area is known for smaller boutique wineries and Pinot Noir/Syrah blends, but there are a few notable Cabernet producers such as Robler. Tasting experiences tend to be more relaxed, with scenic outdoor settings.
- Northern coastal wineries (Mendocino area, including Silver Oak’s Alexander Valley location): The region offers a beautiful scenic drive, and you can find some good Cabernet options, though it is less concentrated than Napa or Sonoma.
- Cakebread and Caymus: These are located in Napa Valley, so including them would require a detour inland from Highway 101.
Napa Valley:
- If bold, high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon is your priority, Napa Valley is unmatched. Wineries like Caymus, Silver Oak (Oakville or Alexander Valley), and Cakebread offer world-class tastings with a focus on Cabernet, often requiring appointments.
- Napa tastings usually involve more formal arrangements (reservations, dress codes vary, tasting fees can be higher). You can meet winemakers or hosts who provide detailed background on their Cabs.
- Sonoma Valley is nearby and offers excellent Cab and Merlot options as well, often less crowded than Napa.
Recommendation:
- For your “one-time, must-try Cabernet experience,” Napa Valley would be the most rewarding in terms of bold Cab-focused tastings.
- If you prefer a scenic road trip along Highway 101, you could pick one or two coastal wineries and then divert to Napa for a day or two to taste Caymus, Cakebread, and Silver Oak. This balances scenic drive with the wine experience.
- Consider making appointments in advance for Napa wineries, especially for Caymus and Silver Oak, to secure the experience you want.
In short, the coastal route is gorgeous and enjoyable, but for bold Cabernet tasting as a priority, Napa Valley is the optimal choice. You could combine both: start your Highway 101 drive for scenic enjoyment, then head inland for Napa for the Cabernet-focused experience.
