Reservations needed for Michigan October road trip?

Hi Wise Advisors,

Perhaps I'm premature with this question, as I'm just beginning to sort through the 17,000+ forum topics for Michigan!, but... We are thinking of a PIBE-- Play It By Ear-- road trip for 2 weeks to Michigan, from our home in NC. We're not City people, and we lean towards scenery-- mountains, shorelines, day hikes in woods--and small towns, talking with local people and supporting local businesses vs. chains as much as possible.

We're not picky about accommodations as long as they are clean, safe, with reasonably comfortable beds.

We prefer trips where we can make it up as we go, vs. planning every night ahead of time. However, where we live, we'd never consider going to our own NC mountains in October without reservations-- leaf looking is big business here!

How necessary is it to reserve accomodations ahead of time in Michigan during first 2 weeks of October?

Thanks in advance for all opinions!

October is one of Michigan’s most beautiful months, especially for scenic drives, fall foliage, and hiking. However, it’s also a popular time for tourism in areas known for leaf-peeping, waterfront scenery, and small-town charm, so planning ahead can help ensure you have options that fit your preferences.

Here’s a detailed look at what to expect and some strategies for a “Play It By Ear” (PIBE) road trip in Michigan during the first two weeks of October:

  • Popular areas can fill up quickly: The Upper Peninsula, Leelanau Peninsula, Traverse City, Mackinac Island area, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Northern Michigan towns often see higher occupancy in early October. Weekend nights, in particular, may sell out at the nicest inns, B&Bs, and waterfront resorts.
  • Smaller towns and inland areas: If you’re open to staying a bit off the main tourist corridors, you can often find accommodations last minute, especially mid-week. Places like inland towns near state parks or lesser-known Lake Michigan towns may have availability without reservations.
  • Type of lodging matters: Chain hotels, motels, and larger resorts tend to fill up fast, whereas smaller B&Bs, cottages, or vacation rentals may have more flexible availability. Booking these last minute can be hit or miss, depending on the area.

Tips for PIBE road trips in Michigan in October:

  • Have a list of backup towns or lodging options along your route. Know a few alternative inns, motels, or Airbnb options so you’re not stuck without choices.
  • Use apps like Booking.com, Expedia, or Airbnb for last-minute availability; many allow instant booking which can be handy if you want to be spontaneous.
  • Consider reserving at least your first night in a central area near where you’ll arrive, so you can unpack and start your trip without stress.
  • Weekdays are generally easier for finding last-minute stays than weekends, which are busier due to leaf viewers and local events.
  • Call ahead if possible. Some smaller inns or B&Bs do not list all rooms online and may have openings that aren’t visible on booking platforms.

In summary, it’s possible to PIBE in Michigan in early October, but your flexibility will dictate how successful this approach is. For popular scenic regions and weekend stays, pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment, while mid-week and lesser-known areas allow more spontaneity.

So, if your goal is spontaneity and adventure, you can still do it, but plan strategically: reserve first night, have alternatives in mind, and be ready to adjust based on occupancy patterns.
