Weather end of September beginning of October?

We have booked a 6 night stay for the end of September. Wondering how weather will be (fingers crossed no hurricanes). We visited last July and it was hot and humid but we fell in love with Savannah and are looking forward to exploring and experiencing more

It’s wonderful to hear that you fell in love with Savannah during your last visit! The weather at the end of September and beginning of October can be more pleasant than the hot, humid summer months, but there are still a few things to keep in mind as you plan your stay.

Weather Overview: By the end of September, Savannah’s weather begins to cool down slightly compared to the peak summer heat. However, it can still be quite warm, especially during the daytime. Average temperatures typically range from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 24-28°C). Nights tend to be cooler, with temperatures in the low 60s to mid-60s (around 16-18°C). Humidity is lower than during the summer months, but it can still feel humid, especially in the afternoons.

Potential for Hurricanes: September is at the tail end of hurricane season, which lasts from June through November. While Savannah is not typically directly hit by hurricanes, the city can still experience heavy rain and strong winds if a storm passes nearby. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on weather forecasts in the days leading up to your trip. However, by early October, the hurricane risk begins to decrease, and the weather generally becomes more stable. Still, it’s always best to check the forecast before you travel, just in case.

What to Expect: Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in terms of activities and attire:

  • Daytime: Expect warm weather during the day, so light and breathable clothing is best. A light jacket or sweater may be needed for the evenings, as it can get a bit cooler after sunset.
  • Rain: There’s always a possibility of rain in Savannah, especially in September. While it’s not typically a heavy downpour, you may experience short afternoon thunderstorms. It’s a good idea to bring a light rain jacket or umbrella just in case.
  • Outdoor Activities: If you plan on exploring Savannah’s beautiful squares, parks, and waterfront, the weather should be perfect for walking. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll likely be doing a fair bit of sightseeing and exploring on foot. The lower humidity makes it more comfortable to stroll around than in the hot summer months.
  • Evenings: The evenings tend to be milder, so you’ll likely want a light jacket or sweater when out and about at night, especially if you’re planning to enjoy dinner or a walk along River Street or Forsyth Park.

Tips for Enjoying Savannah in September/October:

  • Hydrate: Although it’s cooler than in July, the humidity can still make it feel warm, so it’s important to stay hydrated, especially when out walking or sightseeing.
  • Pack for Versatility: Since the weather can fluctuate between warm days and cooler evenings, packing layers (light clothes for the day and something warmer for the night) will make it easier to adapt to the conditions.
  • Outdoor Attractions: This is a great time to take advantage of Savannah’s outdoor attractions, like Forsyth Park, the historic squares, and a boat tour of the Savannah River. The milder weather will make these activities much more enjoyable.

Conclusion: Overall, the end of September and early October in Savannah should offer much more comfortable weather than your July visit, with warm days and cooler evenings. While there’s still a chance of rain and some humidity, it’s an ideal time to explore the city’s outdoor sights. Just keep an eye on the weather for any hurricane activity, and you should have a fantastic time!
