Are hiking boots necessary?

Hi there. We will be in town for one day. We are planning on wearing hiking shoes, not hiking boots because A) that's all we have, and B) they're easier to pack. If we're planning on doing easy/moderate hikes here and in other ports the 2nd week of July, do you think we'll be okay in hiking shoes? Or are we limiting ourselves to flat terrain in town? Thanks so much.

For a one-day visit to Skagway and easy to moderate hikes in the area, hiking shoes are generally sufficient. In July, most trails will be free of snow and mud, and the weather tends to be mild, though rain is always a possibility in Southeast Alaska. Hiking shoes will give you enough support for well-maintained trails, boardwalks, and town paths.

Considerations:

  • Hiking shoes are fine for most day hikes near Skagway, including trails like the Lower Reid Falls Trail, Yakutania Point, and sections of the Chilkoot Trail that are short or moderate.
  • If you plan on doing longer or steeper hikes, especially on the Chilkoot Trail beyond the first few miles, hiking boots with ankle support might be more comfortable and protective.
  • Bring moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters and make your shoes more comfortable for a full day of walking.
  • Even with hiking shoes, consider adding lightweight gaiters if trails are muddy or wet from recent rain.

Practical Tips:

  • Stick to marked trails and avoid overly steep or rocky terrain if your shoes don’t have strong ankle support.
  • Hiking shoes are easier to pack and lighter, which is ideal if you’re doing multiple ports on a cruise or short trips around Alaska.
  • If you plan to do similar easy/moderate hikes in other ports during your second week, the same shoes should suffice.

In summary, your hiking shoes will not limit you to flat terrain entirely, but staying on moderate, well-maintained trails is advisable. For casual hiking and exploring Skagway, they will serve you well.
