Time for Yukon railroad?

We are arriving on Princess in Skagway in June of this year. We want to do the 2.75 Yukon railroad ride. Does it make any difference what time we go? Early or later?

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad in Skagway is a popular excursion, and the time of your ride can make a difference in terms of crowds, lighting for photography, and overall experience. Since the ride lasts about 2.75 hours, timing can affect how busy the train is as well as how you experience the scenery.

Considerations for timing:

  • Early Morning: Trains departing soon after the first wave of cruise ship passengers tend to be less crowded. Early light can be excellent for photos, and wildlife sightings may be more likely at this time. If you are sensitive to heat or prefer a quieter experience, this is a good choice.
  • Midday: Later trains can be busier, especially with multiple cruise ships in port. Midday lighting can be harsher for photography, but the temperature is usually more comfortable if the day is cool in June. The views of mountains and valleys are still spectacular.
  • Late Afternoon/Evening: Afternoon departures can offer warmer light for photos and a more dramatic feel in the valleys, especially if the sun is lower. However, trains later in the day can also coincide with cruise ship crowd peaks, making it slightly more crowded.

Other tips:

  • Book your tickets in advance, especially if you are on a cruise, to secure your preferred departure time.
  • If photography is important, aim for early or late trains for softer, more dramatic lighting.
  • Check if your cruise has priority boarding or timed excursions, as this can influence which train departure is most convenient.

Overall, an early departure is generally recommended for fewer crowds, better lighting, and a more relaxed experience. However, any time of day offers stunning views of the historic route and the surrounding mountains.
