October 2 trip

We are coming to the UP for the first time on October 2. I planned our trip blindly and hope I made the right decisions. We are not spending time on the "mitten" but are going to the Keweenaw peninsula, Porcupine mountains, Munising and Mackinaw. Now I see all this cool stuff in Door County and the mitten...sigh. not enough time to do everything. We are so excited though!

Your October 2 trip to the Upper Peninsula sounds fantastic! You’ve chosen some of the most scenic and iconic areas of the UP, and even though there’s always more to see, your itinerary covers a great mix of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and historic charm.

Keweenaw Peninsula: The Keweenaw offers stunning fall foliage, Lake Superior views, and historic mining towns. Even a short visit will give you a sense of the rugged beauty of the area.

  • Drive along Brockway Mountain Drive for panoramic views.
  • Visit historic towns like Houghton and Calumet for local shops and museums.
  • Explore old copper mines or the Keweenaw National Historical Park sites.

Porcupine Mountains: Perfect for hiking and experiencing pristine wilderness. Fall colors are usually spectacular in early October.

  • Hike the Lake of the Clouds trail for breathtaking vistas.
  • Check out waterfalls like Carp River and Presque Isle.
  • Enjoy some easy nature walks if you prefer less strenuous options.

Munising & Pictured Rocks: Munising is the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Boat tours might still be running, though fall schedules can vary, so check ahead.

  • Take a short hike to Miners Castle for a classic view.
  • Explore waterfalls nearby, such as Munising Falls or Alger Falls.
  • Drive the scenic M-94 route along the lakeshore for photo stops.

Mackinaw (Mackinac) Island: Mackinac is charming and historic. Early October is quieter, making it pleasant for exploring without summer crowds.

  • Walk or rent bikes to explore the island’s trails and historic sites.
  • Visit Fort Mackinac and enjoy the views from the bluff.
  • Try local treats like fudge and visit the waterfront shops.

General Tips:

  • Plan driving routes carefully, as distances in the UP are long; allow extra time for scenic stops.
  • Check seasonal schedules for ferries, boat tours, and some attractions that may close after early fall.
  • Bring layers and rain gear; October can be chilly and unpredictable near the lakes.

Even though you won’t be visiting Door County or the Lower Peninsula, your chosen destinations in the UP offer unique landscapes, waterfalls, lakeshore vistas, and fall colors that are spectacular at this time of year. With careful planning, you’ll have an unforgettable first UP experience!
