My 21 yr old daughter and I are traveling to Michigan tomorrow for the weekend. Our goal is to find a small, quant town with unique shops and restaurants (walkable) Hiking is our top priority as we would love to see the beautiful fall Michigan scenery.
We are traveling from central KY so a quick search found these towns within 6 hours. Both look great but we are unsure which would be best for us. Any thoughts? Or based on hiking and small town, cool vibe, there is another town you recommend?
We had planned on Blowing rock, NC but weather has changed that. We are now expected to expand our hiking area to Michigan!
Thank you!
For a Michigan weekend getaway focused on hiking, fall scenery, and a charming small-town vibe with walkable shops and restaurants, both Saugatuck and Holland are excellent choices, but they offer slightly different experiences.
Saugatuck: This town is known for its artsy, boutique feel. It has a very walkable downtown area with unique shops, galleries, and cafes. The surrounding area offers great outdoor activities, including hiking, dune exploration, and access to Lake Michigan beaches. Saugatuck is smaller and quieter than Holland, making it perfect for a relaxed, intimate weekend.
Holland: Holland is slightly larger and offers more amenities and historic charm. The downtown district has a mix of local shops and restaurants, and during fall, the area near Windmill Island and the surrounding countryside is beautiful for scenic walks and hikes. Holland has more cultural attractions, like art galleries and festivals, which may appeal if you enjoy a livelier small-town atmosphere.
Other recommended towns: If you want a balance of excellent hiking and a small-town, cool vibe, consider:
Overall, if your priority is quiet charm, boutique shops, and close access to dunes and hiking, Saugatuck would likely be the best fit. If you prefer a slightly larger town with more amenities and still very pretty hiking nearby, Holland is a solid choice. For the ultimate fall foliage hikes with a small-town feel, Charlevoix or Harbor Springs might be worth the extra drive.
