I am planning for a day trip from Yale University, CT to Boston with my kid on November 19th. We are in New Haven for a tournament and the kid (14 yrs) has one day off on 19th. We need to come back same day. Need valuable guidance -
1. Mode of transport from New Haven to Boston and back, FlixBus/Greyhound seems to be the cheapest.
2. We would like to see Harvard Univ.and MIT, along with may be Freedom Trail. Don't have time to cover much.
Please guide regarding the mode of transport in the Boston, how to sequence the sights, so that we can be back in New Haven by late evening.
Many Thanks,
Sajal
Planning a one-day trip from New Haven to Boston with a 14-year-old can be fun but requires careful timing, especially if you want to see Harvard, MIT, and the Freedom Trail. Since you need to return the same day, choosing the right mode of transport and sequencing your visit efficiently is key.
1. Mode of Transport from New Haven to Boston:
The cheapest long-distance bus options include FlixBus and Greyhound. Both depart from New Haven’s Union Station and arrive in Boston’s South Station. Typical travel time is around 3.5–4 hours each way. Booking tickets in advance is recommended to secure lower fares. Alternatively, Amtrak trains are faster (about 3.5 hours) but more expensive.
2. Getting Around Boston:
Once in Boston, public transportation via the “T” subway system is convenient. A CharlieTicket or CharlieCard can be purchased for single rides or day passes. Uber/Lyft is also available but can be slower during traffic hours.
3. Suggested Sequence of Sights:
Given your limited time, it is best to plan geographically to minimize backtracking:
4. Return to New Haven:
Tips:
By following this sequence—Harvard and MIT in the morning, lunch nearby, Freedom Trail in the afternoon, then heading back—you can efficiently see key Boston highlights and return to New Haven by late evening.
