Fishing lodge fly in or in Yakutat area

We were scheduled to spend a few days fishing at a fly-in cabin out of Yakutat but the trip got cancelled by the host due to a family emergency. Three of us (one couple and a single) are now looking for another option Sunday September 14 to Friday September 19.

We are used to fishing the Alsek River with our guide bringing us by boat to the best spots along the river for our fill of silver salmon. We were always provided with three meals a day and great friendly hospitality. We also always love seeing the bears.

I'd love to hear your recommendations. We don't need upscale (Johnny's East River Lodge is very basic) but do want to catch fish. We are pretty open to options given our flight to Alaska is coming up next week.

While we usually only fish for salmon, we would be open to a day of fishing the ocean too.

Thank you.

Lori, given your timeframe of Sunday, September 14 to Friday, September 19, and your preference for a Yakutat-area fishing experience with a focus on silver salmon, there are still several options for fly-in or lodge-based fishing trips. Since your usual trip was along the Alsek River, you may want to consider alternatives in the Yakutat area that offer similar guided experiences and bear viewing.

Here are some options to explore:

  • Yakutat Lodge & Guides: Several local lodges offer guided salmon fishing trips along rivers accessible by short flights or boats. Look for lodges that provide meals, accommodations, and guided river access similar to what you’re accustomed to.
  • Fly-In Cabins or Remote Lodges: Even though your original host had to cancel, other fly-in cabins may still have availability for mid-September. Contact lodges like Situk River Lodges or Alsek River Outfitters—both provide guided fishing trips with full meal service and good chances for silver salmon and bear sightings.
  • Combination River & Ocean Fishing: Some lodges offer a day of ocean fishing in addition to river fishing. This can diversify your experience and increase your catch variety. Ask in advance about chartered ocean trips for halibut, lingcod, or salmon in the Yakutat Bay.

Practical tips to consider:

  • Confirm availability immediately, as mid-September can be a popular time for salmon fishing despite the later season.
  • Ensure that the lodge provides meals and that guides are familiar with the best fishing spots along the river for silver salmon.
  • Check if bear viewing opportunities are included as part of the river trip; many guides incorporate wildlife watching while traveling along salmon runs.
  • Consider flexibility on dates or slight adjustments to location if your preferred lodge or fly-in cabin is fully booked.

Given your short notice, calling multiple lodges directly and explaining your situation is the fastest way to secure a spot. Yakutat-area guides are experienced in accommodating small groups, so a three-person party should be easy to fit in with minimal hassle.

Overall, aim for lodges that emphasize guided river fishing, include all meals, and provide comfortable cabins—even if rustic—so you can maximize your fishing and wildlife experience during your five-day trip.
