cape cod trip

Hi so we are going to Boston early April for work. I am thinking now(was going with Maine earlier)

arrive Boston. I think it's 4;30pm we get in the 9th .. go to Plymouth spend the night? Then go to Falmouth nights 10, 11, 12... MV one day.. is this a doable plan?? It will really only be 1:30 to us when we get in ,but by the time we get the rental car I dont think we want a big drive. thanks! Karen

Your plan to arrive in Boston around 4:30pm and then drive to Plymouth for the night is reasonable. The drive from Boston Logan Airport to Plymouth typically takes about 40–50 minutes, so you would likely arrive in Plymouth around 6:00pm–6:30pm, giving you enough time to settle in and have dinner without feeling rushed. Early April is generally quiet, so you won’t face summer traffic.

Spending the next three nights in Falmouth (April 10–12) is also doable and convenient for exploring Cape Cod and planning a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Keep in mind that ferry services to MV from Woods Hole (near Falmouth) are operational in April, but schedules may be limited compared to the summer months, so check ahead for booking times and availability.

Here’s a possible structure for your trip:

  • April 9: Arrive Boston ~4:30pm, pick up rental car, drive to Plymouth, check in, casual evening exploring Plymouth waterfront or dining.
  • April 10: Explore Plymouth (Plimoth Patuxet, Pilgrim Memorial, scenic waterfront), then drive to Falmouth in the afternoon or evening.
  • April 11: Day trip to Martha’s Vineyard from Woods Hole ferry. Explore Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown if time permits. Return to Falmouth in the evening.
  • April 12: Explore Cape Cod attractions near Falmouth (beaches, bike trails, or local shops), or drive along scenic Route 28/Route 6A for small towns like Chatham or Sandwich.

Tips to consider:

  • Booking a hotel in Plymouth for just one night is practical and keeps the first evening short after travel.
  • Falmouth is a convenient base for MV and nearby Cape Cod sights without excessive driving.
  • April weather can be cool and variable; pack layers and rain gear just in case.
  • Driving times are generally shorter than summer months, so your plan to drive from Boston to Plymouth and later around Cape Cod is manageable.

Overall, your itinerary is feasible for early April. It balances travel time with sightseeing and allows you to enjoy a day on Martha’s Vineyard without feeling too rushed.
