Saguaro or Canyon Lake cruise
Looking for recommendation for a lake cruise near Apache Junction: the Desert Belle on Saguaro Lake, or the Dolly Steamboat on Canyon Lake. We are staying in Scottsdale, so it looks like Saguaro Lake would be a bit closer. Time would be next week, around Nov. 13.
Both Saguaro Lake and Canyon Lake offer enjoyable lake cruises, but they have slightly different experiences and access considerations from Scottsdale. Given that you are staying in Scottsdale, the drive time and scenery may influence your choice.
Desert Belle on Saguaro Lake
- Located northeast of Scottsdale, roughly a 35–40 minute drive from central Scottsdale.
- The cruise lasts about 90 minutes and offers a scenic tour along Saguaro Lake, surrounded by Sonoran Desert landscape and unique rock formations.
- Wildlife sightings are common, including birds and occasionally desert bighorn sheep along the shoreline.
- Facilities are well-suited for casual sightseeing, with indoor seating and a snack bar.
- More convenient for a half-day outing given the proximity to Scottsdale.
Dolly Steamboat on Canyon Lake
- Located slightly further east of Apache Junction, about a 50–60 minute drive from Scottsdale.
- The cruise also lasts around 90 minutes and features commentary about the lake’s history, geology, and surrounding Superstition Mountains.
- Offers a more dramatic mountainous backdrop and often feels slightly more “immersive” in the natural setting compared to Saguaro Lake.
- Facilities are similar, with indoor and outdoor seating and light refreshments available.
- May be preferred if you want a more mountainous, scenic lake experience and don’t mind a longer drive.
Recommendation
- If convenience and a shorter drive from Scottsdale are priorities, Desert Belle on Saguaro Lake is a great choice.
- If you are seeking more dramatic scenery with the Superstition Mountains as a backdrop, Dolly Steamboat on Canyon Lake provides a slightly more striking visual experience, though it requires a longer drive.
- Both cruises are comfortable and suitable for a relaxing, scenic outing, so your choice may depend on whether proximity or scenery is your main priority.
