Mutianyu - hiking information

Hello,

I'm going to visit the Great Wall of China - Mutianyu section in April.

I'd like to get to tower 14 with the cable car, the walk up to tower 20, and then walk down to tower 6, and take the toboggan from there. Does anyone know how long this might take, taking into account we might stop for pictures and to enjoy the view?

Many thanks

Visiting the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall and following the route you described is very doable, and it provides a mix of cable car convenience, hiking, and a fun toboggan descent.

Suggested route and timing:

  • Take the cable car from the base to near tower 14. The ride itself takes about 5–10 minutes, plus any queue time.
  • Hike from tower 14 to tower 20. This is moderately strenuous, with some steep sections. Walking at a moderate pace and stopping for photos and to enjoy the scenery usually takes around 1–1.5 hours.
  • Walk down from tower 20 to tower 6. This downhill section is generally easier on the legs, though still uneven in places. Allow around 1–1.5 hours, again depending on the number of stops for photos.
  • Take the toboggan ride from near tower 6 back down to the base. This takes roughly 5–10 minutes per person.

Overall time estimate:

  • Total time for this route including breaks and photo stops: approximately 3–4 hours.
  • Time can vary depending on your pace, number of photo stops, and crowd levels on the cable car and toboggan.

Additional tips:

  • Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially in April which can be busy.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and light snacks.
  • Consider weather conditions, as April can be cool and windy at the higher sections.

In summary, your plan to take the cable car to tower 14, hike up to tower 20, walk down to tower 6, and then ride the toboggan can comfortably be done in 3–4 hours with plenty of time for photos and enjoying the views.
