Which Hop On Hop Off?
Hello,
I just started looking for HOHO bus and see that there is more than one. Any suggestion of which is better? We are active seniors, traveling in Dec.
Thank you.
Washington DC has multiple Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus operators, each offering slightly different routes, schedules, and ticketing options. For active seniors traveling in December, there are a few considerations: weather, accessibility, and ease of hopping on and off near major attractions.
Major HOHO Operators
- Big Bus Tours: One of the most popular operators in DC, offering a comprehensive loop covering the National Mall, monuments, Capitol Hill, and Georgetown. Buses run frequently, and tickets often include audio commentary and free walking tours. In December, buses may be less crowded than peak summer months, but check for possible shorter winter hours.
- Old Town Trolley Tours: Offers a similar route to Big Bus but with slightly fewer stops. The trolley experience is more open-air, which can be chilly in December, but offers unique photo opportunities. They also provide guided commentary and a historic perspective of DC.
- City Sightseeing DC: Another option, often slightly cheaper, with flexible ticketing. Coverage is extensive, and some packages include night tours or combination tickets with river cruises.
Considerations for Seniors in December
- Weather can be cold and windy, especially on open-top buses or trolleys. Consider buses with heated indoor seating if possible.
- Routes that focus on the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and major monuments are ideal to minimize long walks in chilly weather.
- Look for operators that allow flexible hop-on, hop-off schedules so you can spend more time indoors at museums or holiday markets.
- Check for combo tickets with guided walking tours, river cruises, or night tours for added value and comfort.
Recommendation: For December travel and active seniors, Big Bus Tours is generally the easiest and most comfortable choice due to heated buses, frequent service, and comprehensive stops covering most DC highlights. Old Town Trolley Tours is good if you enjoy a historic-style trolley experience and don’t mind exposure to the elements. City Sightseeing can be considered for budget-conscious travelers or if you want to combine with other attractions.
Tip: Purchase tickets online in advance, and consider starting early in the day to maximize daylight for sightseeing and avoid late afternoon chill.
