Capitol Tour - can you bring a closed cup?

Specifically something like a Stanley that can be closed. I know no open containers are allowed. We have opted to bring a Stanley as the last time we were at the National Mall it was almost impossible to find drinking water. Anyone with experience on this?

When planning a Capitol tour in Washington DC, the security rules are fairly strict, but there is some flexibility regarding closed beverage containers.

According to the official guidelines for the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, visitors are not allowed to bring open containers of any kind into the building. However, sealed or fully closed bottles and cups are generally permitted. This means that a Stanley or similar insulated travel mug with a tight-sealing lid is acceptable, as long as it cannot be easily opened or spill liquid.

Here are some practical tips based on visitor experiences:

  • Make sure your Stanley or cup is fully closed and sealed before entering security.
  • Do not carry loose ice, partially filled bottles, or containers that could spill easily; these may be confiscated.
  • It’s a good idea to have a backpack or bag to carry your closed cup, as security may inspect your bag.
  • You can refill your bottle or cup at water fountains available inside the Visitor Center.
  • If your cup is very large or made of metal, security may want to briefly inspect it, so allow extra time.

In summary, a Stanley or other closed, spill-proof container is allowed for a Capitol tour. This is a convenient way to stay hydrated, especially during the summer when walking the National Mall and waiting in lines can be dehydrating.

Always check the latest Visitor Center guidelines before your visit, as security policies can change.
