Matanuska Glacier access

Google maps shows a road from Hwy 1 using Glacier Park road turning into Island road with parking at the end. Is this open to the public as I see some notes stating that you need a guide to go to the glacier

Matanuska Glacier is one of the few glaciers in Alaska that is publicly accessible without a mandatory guide, but there are important distinctions regarding how far you can safely go on your own.

The road you mentioned—turning off the Glenn Highway (Hwy 1) onto Glacier Park Road and then Island Road—does indeed lead to a parking area near the glacier’s toe. This area is open to the public and can be accessed without a guide.

  • You can park at the end of Island Road and walk on the lower, moraine area of the glacier. This gives good views and allows for photos.
  • The terrain near the toe is relatively easy to walk, but it can be uneven, wet, and slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
  • There are no facilities or staff at this area, so plan accordingly for water, food, and safety.

However, venturing further onto the glacier, including climbing ice features, crevasses, or going higher up the glacier surface, is strongly discouraged without a professional guide due to significant hazards such as hidden crevasses, ice falls, and slippery conditions.

  • Guided tours are recommended if you want to walk on the ice itself, use crampons, or safely explore deeper sections of the glacier.
  • Guides also provide educational context, safety gear, and transportation for areas that are more difficult to access.
  • Several local companies offer half-day or full-day guided hikes on Matanuska Glacier.

In summary, you can safely access and view Matanuska Glacier on your own from the parking area at the end of Island Road, but if your goal is to walk on the ice or explore further, hiring a guide is the safest option.
