Whittier question

We are ending our cruise in Whittier and will take the 6:45 pm train to Anchorage. Any suggestions on what we can do until then? On our first cruise, we ended in Seward and did the Major Marine boat trip, and it was fantastic. Is there anything similar in Whittier? We are adding 4-5 days on our own to see Denali post cruise.

Whittier is much smaller than Seward, so the options for half-day excursions are more limited. The town itself is centered around the port and is very walkable, with a few shops and restaurants. You can certainly enjoy some relaxed sightseeing before catching your 6:45 PM train to Anchorage.

Here are some suggestions for things to do in Whittier while you wait for the train:

  • Port and Waterfront Walk: Stroll around the harbor area to see the cruise ships, tugboats, and the surrounding mountains. The scenery is dramatic and offers great photo opportunities.
  • Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel: This is the famous tunnel connecting Whittier to the highway system. While you cannot walk through it, you can view the entrance and learn about its history. It’s the longest highway tunnel in North America.
  • Local Cafes and Restaurants: Grab a casual lunch or early dinner at a local spot. Options are limited, but places like the Whittier Fish Company offer fresh seafood.
  • Whittier Visitor Center: Check out local information, small exhibits, and maps of the surrounding area. It’s a good way to learn about the local wildlife and history.
  • Short Wildlife Viewing or Beach Walk: Depending on timing, you may have a quick walk along the shoreline to see local birds, seals, or just enjoy the scenery. Keep in mind the tide and weather.

Unlike Seward, there aren’t organized major marine tours departing from Whittier itself. If you want a longer marine experience, you would need to drive or take a tour to nearby locations, which may not be feasible with a train departure at 6:45 PM.

Planning tip: Whittier is small, so allow extra time to get to the train station. The station is right near the port, but lines can move slowly if your train is busy. Bring snacks, and enjoy the waterfront views until it’s time to board for Anchorage.
