Live music/hula
Visiting Kaua'i in mid-January. Staying in Princeville. Looking for recommendations for live music and/or hula (both Auana and Kahiko). Is there any island-wide publication that has a calendar for such events? Any hālau that allows visitors? Mahalo!
Kaua'i is a wonderful place to enjoy traditional Hawaiian live music and hula, both Auana (modern style) and Kahiko (ancient style). There are several options for experiencing live performances and connecting with hula traditions while you’re on the island. Here are some recommendations for you:
Live Music and Hula Events on Kaua'i:
- Kalapaki Beach Hut – Located in Lihue, Kalapaki Beach Hut hosts live Hawaiian music and hula performances on select nights. It's a great spot for enjoying some traditional tunes with a casual, relaxed vibe.
- Hanalei Bay – While in Princeville, the nearby town of Hanalei often has live music events, especially in the evenings. Many restaurants and bars, like Bar Acuda and The Hanalei Dolphin, feature live local musicians. Check with venues for any hula performances or Hawaiian-themed nights during your visit.
- The Plantation Garden Restaurant – Located in Koloa, this restaurant offers Hawaiian cultural nights with live music and hula performances. It’s a great way to experience both traditional and modern Hawaiian music while enjoying a delicious meal.
- Luau Shows – Kaua'i has several venues that host luau events, which usually include both live music and hula dancing. Popular luau shows include the Smith's Tropical Paradise Luau in Wailua and the Luau Kalamaku in Lihue. These luaus feature both Auana and Kahiko hula styles and are a fun way to experience Hawaiian culture in a festive setting.
- Live Music at The Kauai Beer Company – In Lihue, Kauai Beer Company often has live performances from local musicians. While hula may not always be part of the program, you can expect great Hawaiian tunes and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere.
Island-Wide Publications and Calendar Listings:
- Island Life Kauai – Island Life Kauai is a local magazine that often features a calendar of events, including live music and hula performances. They have both a print publication and an online version where you can find up-to-date listings of cultural events around the island.
- Kauai Calendar of Events – This is a community-driven website that lists local events happening across the island, including live music, hula shows, and other Hawaiian cultural events. It’s a good resource for planning your activities around Kaua'i.
- The Garden Isle Newspaper – Kaua'i’s local newspaper often includes a section on upcoming events, including music and hula performances. Check the online calendar for event details or pick up a copy when you arrive.
Hālau (Hula Schools) and Visitor Opportunities:
- Halau Hula O Ka Lehua Pu'upu'u – This hālau, located on Kaua'i, offers traditional hula classes and often welcomes visitors to watch or participate in their classes. They specialize in both Kahiko and Auana styles, so it’s a great place to learn more about the different forms of hula. You can contact them in advance to inquire about any visitor-friendly events or opportunities to observe a class.
- Na Hula O Kauai – This is another hālau on the island that offers hula lessons, workshops, and performances. They may have events open to visitors, or you could reach out to see if they offer any public hula performances during your stay.
- Kauai’s Hula Hui – While not a specific hālau, Kaua'i has a number of hula clubs and hui (groups) that occasionally perform at local events. Some of these performances are open to the public, so keep an eye on local event calendars for performances by hula practitioners from various hālau.
Overall, Kaua'i offers many ways to enjoy live music and hula during your visit. Whether you're attending a luau, watching local musicians at a restaurant, or finding a local hālau performance, you're sure to immerse yourself in the spirit of aloha and the beauty of Hawaiian culture. I’d recommend checking with local venues and publications upon arrival to confirm any live music or hula events during your stay. Enjoy your time on the Garden Isle!
