One Weekend
A friend and I will be in Tucson next weekend for a short visit. We'll be landing mid-day on Saturday, spend all day Sunday, and depart for home mid-day on Monday. We would like to visit both parts of Saguaro National Park, Sabino Canyon, and possibly the Silverbell Arts & Crafts Festival (which looks to be close to West Saguaro).
What would be the best way to plan our time? What lends itself to just an afternoon or morning, what should we do on our one full day?
For a short weekend in Tucson, it’s important to prioritize your activities so you can enjoy the highlights without feeling rushed. Since you have a mid-day arrival on Saturday, a full Sunday, and mid-day departure on Monday, here’s a suggested plan:
Saturday Afternoon:
- After landing, check in to your accommodation and grab a quick lunch.
- Head to Sabino Canyon for a relaxing afternoon. You can take the tram up the canyon and enjoy short hikes at scenic stops. This allows you to experience the desert landscape without committing to long hikes right after your travel.
- Alternatively, if you prefer, a short visit to Saguaro National Park West for a scenic drive or a brief walk is also a nice introduction.
Sunday – Full Day:
- Start early at Saguaro National Park East (Rincon Mountain District) for morning light and cooler temperatures. Spend a few hours on easy hikes like the Desert Discovery Trail or Signal Hill.
- Drive to Saguaro National Park West (Tucson Mountain District) in the late morning or early afternoon. Enjoy the scenic Bajada Loop Drive and short hikes like the Valley View Overlook Trail.
- If the Silverbell Arts & Crafts Festival is ongoing near Saguaro West, you can visit in the afternoon while staying in that area.
- End the day with sunset views—either back at Saguaro West or atop Gates Pass for iconic Tucson desert vistas.
Monday Morning:
- Check out and have breakfast.
- If time allows before heading to the airport, a short visit to any remaining spots at Saguaro West, or a walk along a short Sabino Canyon trail can be done. Keep the timing flexible to ensure a stress-free departure.
Tips:
- Start hikes early in the day to avoid the midday heat, even in winter months.
- Pack water, sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Consider that Saguaro National Park West and East are about a 30–40 minute drive apart, so plan accordingly.
With this plan, you’ll be able to experience both sides of Saguaro National Park, enjoy Sabino Canyon, and fit in the festival, all without overloading any single day.
