Help w/ planning: lodging & sites

Hello! Planning a 5 night getaway w/ my husband in January & could use a little help.

LODGING: We will be spending our points and have narrowed it down to either the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain or the JW Marriott Starr Pass. Which would you recommend & why? We are looking for a peaceful/scenic property, updated rooms, walking/hiking trails, heated pools without loud music/lounge chair shortages, good food, pleasant service, possibly golf for my husband.

ACTIVITIES: So far we know we want to visit Saguaro National Park (West). What else is a must do? Sabino Canyon? SNP (East)? Sonora Desert Museum?

WEATHER: what to expect in mid to late January? Is it swimming weather & do the resorts keep their pools open and heated?

Thank you!

For a 5-night January getaway in Tucson, both the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain and JW Marriott Starr Pass offer excellent accommodations, but there are some differences to consider depending on your preferences.

Lodging:

  • Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain: Nestled in the Tortolita Mountains northwest of Tucson, this property is extremely scenic and peaceful, with luxurious, updated rooms. It has extensive hiking trails on-site, golf options, and multiple pools (some adults-only and heated). The atmosphere tends to be quieter, making it ideal for relaxation. Dining is high quality, and service is consistently praised.
  • JW Marriott Starr Pass: Located closer to Tucson proper and Saguaro National Park West, this resort is also scenic with desert and mountain views. It has several pools, though some may be busier and include more family activity. Hiking trails exist but are less extensive than Dove Mountain. Golf is available. Rooms are well-appointed, and the resort offers good dining options. It may feel slightly more active due to the proximity to the city and larger resort layout.

Given your desire for a peaceful, scenic property with quiet heated pools and good hiking, Dove Mountain may be the better fit, especially if you prioritize tranquility over proximity to Tucson attractions.

Activities:

  • Saguaro National Park (West): Absolutely a must-see. The west district is great for scenic drives and shorter hikes.
  • Saguaro National Park (East): Worth a visit if you want different landscapes and trails; it is less crowded than the west side.
  • Sabino Canyon: Excellent for hiking or tram tours through the canyon; family-friendly trails and wildlife viewing.
  • Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: Combines a zoo, botanical garden, and natural history museum—highly recommended for learning about desert flora and fauna.
  • Optional additional activities:
    • Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway for views, short hikes, and wildlife.
    • Tucson Mountain Park trails for easy hiking close to the JW Marriott if you stay there.
    • Sunset photography at Gates Pass or Tumamoc Hill.

Weather:

  • January temperatures in Tucson are typically mild, ranging from lows in the 40s–50s °F to highs in the mid-60s °F. It can be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so dress in layers.
  • Pool swimming is possible; most resort pools are heated, though the air temperature may make it slightly brisk outside the water. Hot tubs are ideal for cooler mornings or evenings.
  • Rain is uncommon but possible, so check the forecast closer to your trip.

In summary, if your priority is peace, scenery, and quiet hiking with luxury accommodations, the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain is likely the better choice. The JW Marriott Starr Pass is more convenient for accessing city attractions and Saguaro West but may be slightly more active and crowded. Both locations offer heated pools, golf, and quality dining, so either would provide an enjoyable January getaway.
