advise on rainy weather forecast?

Hello,

We're planning to hike Saguaro Nat'l Park East and West next Thursday and Friday (March 13-14) and the Tuscon forecast is for 'steady rain' on Thursday. I don't see a forecast specifically for the parks....but assume it's the same as Tuscon. Any advice for Thursday? Is the park still an option or would you advise against it due to bad footing, etc.? If against, any other ideas on things to do for a whole day? We're travelling from east coast so not really familiar with desert 'rains'.

Thank you,

Jenn

Hiking in Saguaro National Park during steady rain can be challenging. While desert rain is generally less frequent and heavy than in other regions, it can make trails slippery, create temporary washes, and reduce visibility. Some trails, especially rocky or sandy ones, may become more difficult or unsafe when wet.

If you choose to hike in the rain, consider these precautions:

  • Stick to shorter, well-maintained trails close to the visitor centers, such as the Desert Discovery Trail (East) or Valley View Overlook Trail (West), which are less likely to be treacherous when wet.
  • Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes or boots to prevent slipping.
  • Bring a waterproof jacket, hat, and layers; desert rain can feel cooler and winds may increase.
  • Avoid hiking near washes or dry creek beds, as sudden rain upstream can cause flash flooding.
  • Keep an eye on the sky and be prepared to turn back if the rain intensifies.

If you prefer to avoid the potential hazards of hiking in steady rain, there are several alternative indoor or sheltered activities in Tucson:

  • Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: A mix of indoor exhibits and outdoor areas; many exhibits are covered and provide insight into local flora and fauna.
  • Pima Air & Space Museum: Large indoor and semi-covered aircraft exhibits; great for all ages.
  • Tucson Museum of Art: Explore local and contemporary art in a climate-controlled setting.
  • Shopping and dining: Downtown Tucson, Fourth Avenue, or La Encantada offer shops and restaurants with indoor options.
  • Historic Missions: Mission San Xavier del Bac has both indoor and covered outdoor spaces; can be a short and interesting visit.

Overall, while light rain may be manageable for experienced hikers, steady rain increases risk. For a safer and more relaxed day, consider planning an indoor activity or visiting sites with covered areas.
