Places of interest close to Zhangjiajie
Hi. We are currently in Zhangjiajie with plans to also visit Phoenix and Furong ancient towns. Planned travel days 7 days.
Unfortunately, Batik Airlines just rescheduled our return flight and we are stuck here for another 3 days.
Would appreciate suggestions on which places we could visit close to Zhangjiajie. We love the outdoors, nature, hiking, sightseeing, etc. We've already been to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an.
Also, if anyone has faced a similar issue with Batik Airlines and had a solution that they can share, please do. Would appreciate it.
Thanks
If you have an unexpected extra three days in Zhangjiajie, there are several nearby destinations and activities you can consider to make the most of your time, especially since you enjoy nature, hiking, and sightseeing. Zhangjiajie is surrounded by scenic areas that are less crowded than the main Wulingyuan National Park.
1. Nearby Natural and Outdoor Attractions
- Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve: Located within Wulingyuan but often quieter than the main Zhangjiajie Scenic Area. Offers hiking trails, panoramic viewpoints, and dramatic sandstone peaks.
- Yangjiajie Scenic Area: A less visited area compared to Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, ideal for hiking and exploring unique rock formations. Some trails can be challenging but rewarding for nature lovers.
- Golden Whip Stream: A scenic and relatively easy hike along a river with towering cliffs and lush forest. Perfect for a relaxing day immersed in nature.
- Huangshi Village: Offers hiking opportunities with fewer tourists and fantastic views of the Zhangjiajie sandstone pillars.
2. Cultural and Historical Nearby Towns
- Furong Ancient Town: A picturesque riverside town with Miao culture, waterfalls, and traditional architecture. About 2–3 hours from Zhangjiajie by car.
- Phoenix (Fenghuang) Ancient Town: Famous for its preserved Ming and Qing architecture, riverside scenery, and traditional local culture. Approximately 4 hours by car, so better for a day trip with early departure or overnight stay.
- Local Villages: Consider exploring small nearby ethnic minority villages to experience local culture, crafts, and traditional lifestyles.
3. Tips for Outdoor and Hiking Activities
- Check weather conditions before hiking; Zhangjiajie can be misty or rainy in winter months.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and snacks, especially for less serviced trails like Yangjiajie.
- Consider hiring a local guide for lesser-known trails to enhance safety and cultural insights.
4. Airline Issues
Regarding Batik Airlines rescheduling, similar experiences are common with regional carriers. Solutions often include:
- Contact the airline directly for rebooking options or compensation.
- Check if your travel insurance covers flight delays or cancellations.
- Consider booking an alternative flight with another airline if urgent travel is needed.
In summary, with three extra days in Zhangjiajie, you can explore Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream, and Huangshi Village for outdoor adventures. For cultural excursions, Furong and Phoenix ancient towns are excellent options, with careful planning for travel times. Meanwhile, actively resolving your flight issue with Batik Airlines or exploring alternative flights will ensure you make the most of your extended stay.
