Guys weekend. St Petes Beach? Clearwater? Other?

HI All - 6-8 guy group of recently turned 50 looking to meet up in the Tampa area 4/4/25-4/7/25. Looking to rent a house, but wanted to see the thoughts on a general local. We will be doing some hanging at the house, take in some local bars, and maybe swing some clubs. Not looking for fancy night/clubs, just some good vibes, views, and people. Thoughts on St Petes Beach area vs other in the Tamp area for our group. Thanks!

Hi! Planning a guys’ weekend in the Tampa/St. Pete area in early April can be a lot of fun. Both St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach have strong points depending on what kind of vibe your group is looking for, and there are a few alternative areas worth considering as well.

St. Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach has a more relaxed, slightly upscale beach town feel, but it’s still lively enough for bars and casual nightlife. It’s a good choice if your group wants to rent a house with beach access, enjoy sunsets, and have easy access to restaurants and casual bars.

  • Lots of rental houses and condos with beach views, many with pools.
  • Passable nightlife: The Salty Rim, Caddy’s on the Beach, and some smaller bars offer a friendly local vibe.
  • Walkable in parts, but a car is handy for hopping between beach areas or visiting St. Petersburg city proper.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is busier and more tourist-oriented. It has a wide beach and lots of bars, restaurants, and some casual clubs.

  • Great for a slightly more energetic scene and easy access to beach activities.
  • More crowded than St. Pete Beach, but lots of dining options and water sports rentals.
  • Good for walking along Pier 60 or the Beach Walk area in the evenings for drinks and socializing.

Alternative Areas to Consider

  • Madeira Beach / Johns Pass: Just north of St. Pete, slightly quieter than Clearwater, with rental houses near the water and a good selection of bars and seafood spots.
  • Indian Rocks Beach: A smaller, quieter beach community with rentals and casual local bars, great if your group wants a laid-back weekend without big crowds.
  • St. Petersburg Downtown / Beach Drive area: If you want more nightlife, craft beer bars, and restaurants within walking distance, this area provides a city vibe with waterfront views.

Recommendations for Your Group

  • For a mix of beach, casual bars, and good rental options: St. Pete Beach is probably your best balance.
  • If your priority is nightlife and a high-energy scene: Clearwater Beach has more happening but will be busier and possibly more expensive for rentals.
  • If you prefer a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere with easy access to bars: Madeira Beach or Indian Rocks Beach are excellent alternatives.
  • Make sure the rental house has a pool or outdoor space for hanging out during the day, as some days may be more about relaxing at the house than going out.

Overall, for a 6-8 guy group who want beach, casual bars, and a relaxed yet fun atmosphere, St. Pete Beach or Madeira Beach would likely offer the best combination of comfort, vibe, and access to amenities without being overwhelmingly crowded.
