Accessibility

We want to visit the island and have someone that will need to use a power chair to get around. Is that an easy thing to do while visiting? We hope to visit mid June and stay on the island.

Visiting Mackinac Island while using a power chair is definitely possible, but there are a few factors to keep in mind as the island’s infrastructure is unique compared to typical tourist destinations.

Here are some key points about accessibility on Mackinac Island:

  • Transportation: The island is car-free, so transportation options are limited to bicycles, horse-drawn carriages, and walking. However, there are some businesses that provide transportation in special vehicles for those with mobility impairments. For power chair users, it is recommended to arrange for transportation in advance through the ferry company or hotels.
  • Ferry Access: There are ferries that run to and from the island, and some of them are equipped to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges, including power chairs. It’s important to check with the ferry companies about their accessibility features and book tickets early to ensure proper accommodations. The ferry ride itself is accessible, but you should confirm the specific accommodations when booking.
  • Sidewalks and Roads: The island’s main roads and sidewalks are not always designed for power chair access, especially in certain areas with steep inclines. However, the downtown area is relatively flat, and many of the paths are wheelchair accessible. Some parts of the island, particularly areas that are more natural or hilly, may present challenges, so it’s a good idea to research accessible routes in advance.
  • Hotels and Accommodations: Many hotels on the island are aware of the need for accessibility and offer rooms that are equipped for guests using mobility devices. It's a good idea to call ahead to confirm the availability of accessible rooms and inquire about any special services for power chair users.

In terms of activities, while Mackinac Island is known for its outdoor beauty, it’s possible to explore much of the downtown area and visit attractions like Fort Mackinac or Arch Rock with the right preparation. Some guided tours may also be available to accommodate those with mobility needs.

In summary, while Mackinac Island is not the most straightforward destination for those using a power chair, with some planning and the right accommodations, it can still be an enjoyable and accessible place to visit. Contacting the ferry companies, hotels, and tour providers ahead of time will ensure that you can fully enjoy the island and its attractions during your trip in mid-June.
