Two days at Napa - recommendations

Hi

We plan to visit Napa for 2 days at the end of August.

For day 1, we plan to book a tasting tour with Platypus wine tours. Does anyone know which wineries they usually take people to?

For day 2, we plan to drive around and visit two wineries ourselves. We are from Europe, so we are looking for something that is uniquely Napa, rather than something that appears to be modelled on European vineyards (e.g. Castello di Amorosa, not sure if this is a fair representation, but only based on my perception). Do you have any recommendations? What would your top 2-3 not to be missed wineries recommendations be?

Thanks!

Platypus Wine Tours is known for creating flexible itineraries that often focus on boutique wineries and smaller, less-crowded estates. While the exact wineries visited can vary based on season, group preference, and availability, their tours typically include a mix of:

  • Smaller family-owned wineries producing distinctive Napa varietals.
  • Wineries offering unique tasting experiences, such as blending sessions or vineyard walks.
  • Occasionally, a mix of well-known Napa producers along with hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

Since they tailor tours based on preferences, it’s a good idea to contact them directly and mention any wine styles or types of experiences you are particularly interested in.

For day 2, if you want something uniquely Napa rather than European-inspired replicas, consider wineries that emphasize Napa terroir, innovation, and character:

  • Quintessa: Focused on biodynamic farming and a true sense of Napa terroir. The estate offers a serene setting and guided tastings that emphasize their philosophy and wines’ expression of the land.
  • Far Niente: Historic winery with a strong Napa identity, combining beautiful vineyards, caves, and exceptional Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate architecture and ambiance are classic Napa rather than European copycat.
  • Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars: Iconic Napa Valley winery, famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and the role in the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Offers a quintessential Napa experience with vineyard views and tasting guided by knowledgeable staff.
  • Cade Estate Winery: Perched on Spring Mountain, with a modern Napa twist and incredible views over the valley. Emphasizes Bordeaux varietals but with clear Napa identity.

If you only have time for 2-3 visits, a recommended combination could be:

  • Quintessa or Cade Estate for the elevated, terroir-focused experience with beautiful views.
  • Far Niente for historic charm and an iconic Napa tasting.
  • Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars for a legendary Napa experience and insight into Cabernet culture.

This combination gives a mix of boutique, historic, and iconic Napa experiences without feeling like a European imitation. Remember to make reservations in advance, as many Napa wineries require bookings, especially in late August.
