Bioluminescence in mid-March?

We will be in Cocoa Beach in mid March and I'd love to take my daughter (9) on a bioluminescence kayak tour. As I understand it, they are more visible in warmer months. Can you see them in March or would that be too cold? Thanks in advance!

Bioluminescence kayaking tours around Cocoa Beach can be an incredible experience for kids and adults alike, but the visibility and intensity of the bioluminescence can vary with the season, water temperature, and moon phase.

In general, the warm summer months (June through October) tend to have the most consistent and vibrant displays, because higher water temperatures encourage the growth of the bioluminescent organisms (typically dinoflagellates). That said, it is sometimes possible to see bioluminescence outside of peak season, including March, but it is less predictable and often less intense.

For mid-March specifically:

  • Water temperatures are cooler (around 65–70°F), which can reduce the activity of bioluminescent organisms.
  • Visibility can still occur, especially during very dark nights with little moonlight, but the glow may be fainter compared to summer.
  • The tours themselves are still fun, as kayaking in the calm Indian River Lagoon or Mosquito Lagoon can be enjoyable, and you may still spot some glowing streaks from paddle movements or small organisms.

Tips to maximize your chance of seeing bioluminescence:

  • Choose a tour in a darker location away from city lights, ideally on a new moon or when the moon is less visible.
  • Check with local tour operators, as they often know the current conditions and can advise if the bioluminescence is active enough to make a tour worthwhile.
  • Be prepared for cooler evening temperatures in March, especially on the water—dress in layers or bring a light waterproof jacket.

In summary, while March is outside the peak season for bioluminescence in Cocoa Beach, it is still possible to see some glow, but it will likely be less vivid than in summer. The experience can still be memorable and enjoyable, especially for a 9-year-old who will enjoy the kayaking and exploring the waterways.
