Toll Charges

We will be travelling throughout Florida in our car and was wondering how the tolls work. Do we pay at a booth? Do they send the charges to our home address? Any help would be great.

Florida has an extensive network of toll roads, and the way you pay depends on whether you have an electronic toll transponder or not. Here’s a detailed overview:

1. Toll Collection Methods:

  • Cash Toll Booths: Some roads still have traditional toll booths where you can pay with cash. However, many toll roads in Florida have moved to cashless systems.
  • Electronic Tolling (SunPass / Toll-by-Plate): Most major toll roads use electronic toll collection. Vehicles with a SunPass transponder are billed automatically at a discounted rate. If you do not have a SunPass, the system will use Toll-by-Plate, taking a photo of your license plate and sending a bill to the registered vehicle address.

2. Paying Without a SunPass:

  • If you don’t have a SunPass, you can still drive on the toll roads. Your license plate will be photographed, and an invoice will be mailed to the car’s registered address. These invoices typically include the toll amount plus a small administrative fee.
  • You can also prepay a temporary toll pass online if you’re visiting Florida, which can simplify payment and avoid mailed bills.

3. Tips for Travelers:

  • Consider renting a SunPass or portable transponder if you plan to use multiple toll roads; it often saves money and avoids administrative fees.
  • Check if your rental car already includes a toll option—some rental companies provide an electronic toll program for a daily fee.
  • Keep in mind that toll roads in Florida can be more efficient than local roads for long trips, but not using SunPass can increase costs due to administrative fees.

In summary, you can pay cash at some toll booths, but the majority of Florida toll roads are cashless. If you don’t use SunPass, tolls will be billed to the vehicle owner via Toll-by-Plate. Planning ahead with SunPass or temporary toll passes can save both money and hassle while traveling through Florida.
