Greetings all!
I recently lost my father at 70 and my mother is now alone, has not traveled much in her life and always talked about wanting to go to the Grand Canyon. I booked her the plane tickets for Christmas this year and am now trying to piece together a schedule for the trip and I am hoping some of y'all with better knowledge of the local area can help me out. The trip is scheduled from April 5 to April 9 with a redeye late the night of the 9th. I am open to any and all suggestions if I should reorganize the following to get the most out of this trip.
April 5- fly into PHX, rent a car and stay the night in Phoenix. Getting in late so this is set in stone and booked already.
April 6- My initial plan was to drive to Sedona in the morning and find something to do there. Any suggestions on the best activities? She can do moderate hikes etc.
April 7- Sedona day 2 activity
April 8- Grand Canyon- Should I go with one of the guided tours on this?
April 9- Antelop Canyon- hike and drive back to PHX for red eye.
I thank you in advance for any help!
First, I want to acknowledge your thoughtfulness in planning this trip for your mother—it sounds like a very meaningful experience. With the schedule you’ve outlined, I think you can create a memorable yet comfortable pace for her, especially considering she isn’t a frequent traveler. Here’s a detailed suggestion for your itinerary with activity ideas, timing, and practical tips.
April 5 – Phoenix Arrival
Since you’re arriving late, staying overnight in Phoenix is perfect. Try to choose a hotel near the airport to minimize stress after a redeye or evening flight. A simple dinner and early rest will prepare you both for the drive to Sedona the next morning.
April 6 – Phoenix to Sedona
The drive from Phoenix to Sedona takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Once you arrive, here are some activities suitable for moderate hiking and sightseeing:
Consider an early evening walk in Uptown Sedona or enjoying a local café to experience the town’s charm.
April 7 – Sedona Day 2
For a second day, you could explore slightly different areas or experiences:
Try to end the day with sunset views at Airport Mesa or another lookout point—it’s breathtaking and low-effort.
April 8 – Grand Canyon
Driving from Sedona to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon takes roughly 2.5 hours. For your mother, guided tours can enhance the experience without adding stress:
Plan for a full day with breaks at viewpoints, photos, and maybe a light meal at one of the lodges. If possible, book a sunset viewpoint—it’s one of the highlights of the Grand Canyon.
April 9 – Antelope Canyon and Return to Phoenix
Antelope Canyon is about a 2-hour drive from the Grand Canyon area (near Page, AZ). Morning tours are recommended for the best light inside the canyon. Here are tips:
This day is long in terms of driving, so an early start is essential. Depending on your mother’s comfort, you might consider skipping Antelope Canyon to enjoy a more relaxed morning at the Grand Canyon and depart directly to Phoenix.
Additional Tips
Overall, your itinerary is quite feasible, but the April 9 schedule is tight and involves a lot of driving. If maximizing comfort and relaxation is a priority, you might shift Antelope Canyon to a future visit and enjoy a more leisurely final day at the Grand Canyon.
