North Rim Lodging

Hi All— I’m looking for recommendations for places to stay near the north rim on the Grand Canyon. It’s been challenging since most hotels end up being technically close, but a 3 hour drive since you have to get all the way around the canyon. We don’t need fancy— just clean and basic. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Staying near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a bit trickier than the South Rim due to its remote location and limited lodging options. The North Rim itself has very few accommodations, so most visitors choose either on-site options or nearby towns along the route to the rim. Here’s a breakdown of practical choices for clean, basic lodging.

On the North Rim:

  • Grand Canyon Lodge – North Rim: The only lodging inside the park on the North Rim. Rooms are rustic but clean, and the location is unbeatable—right on the rim with easy access to viewpoints. Reservations are required well in advance, especially for June–September. There’s a dining room and general store onsite.
  • North Rim Campground: If you are open to tent or RV camping, the campground is nearby and provides a simple, natural experience. Facilities are basic, and you need to bring your own supplies.

Outside the Park (within driving range):

  • Jacob Lake Inn: About 45 minutes north of the North Rim, this is a small lodge with clean rooms and a café. It’s simple and comfortable, good for travelers wanting a basic place to sleep and a meal.
  • Kaibab Plateau Lodge or Cabins: Slightly further out, offering cabin-style accommodations. Rustic, clean, and family-friendly.
  • Fredonia / Kanab area: Approximately 1.5–2 hours from the North Rim. These towns offer motels and basic inns that are clean and affordable, but you’ll need to drive the extra distance each day.

Tips:

  • North Rim is only open mid-May through mid-October, so plan accordingly.
  • Book as early as possible for on-site lodging—availability is extremely limited.
  • If you prefer driving less, the Grand Canyon Lodge is ideal; otherwise, Jacob Lake Inn is a good compromise with a short drive to the rim.
  • Expect simple, rustic accommodations—there are no luxury hotels here, but the views and proximity to trails more than make up for it.

In summary, for minimal driving and easy access to viewpoints, staying at Grand Canyon Lodge is your best bet. If that’s full, Jacob Lake Inn provides a convenient and clean alternative. For budget-conscious travelers willing to drive, Fredonia or Kanab motels are serviceable options.
