Things to do in February
First time in the area for hubby and I. Looking for recommendations on outdoor activities/fishing/dolphin cruises or anything else that would be a “must do” since it’s probably too cold to get in the water. ;)
Visiting Destin in February can be a lovely experience since the area is much quieter than the peak summer season. While the water may be too cold for swimming, there are still plenty of outdoor activities, scenic experiences, and fun excursions to enjoy, especially if you like fishing, nature, or exploring the local area.
Outdoor and Scenic Activities
- Dolphin Cruises and Wildlife Tours: Several local operators run dolphin-watching tours along the coast. Even in February, these trips are enjoyable as dolphins are active year-round. You can also spot seabirds and other marine wildlife.
- Harbor Walk Village: Explore this waterfront area for shops, restaurants, and small attractions. You can stroll along the marina, watch boats, and enjoy the coastal views.
- Destin Harbor Boardwalk: A scenic place to walk, take photos, and enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. In cooler weather, it’s much more peaceful than during the summer.
- Hiking and Nature Trails: Henderson Beach State Park offers easy walking trails, dunes, and coastal scenery. Other nearby parks like Topsail Hill Preserve State Park have boardwalks and nature trails that are perfect for a quiet outdoor day.
Fishing and Boating
- Deep Sea Fishing Charters: Destin is famous as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Many charters operate year-round, and February trips can be great for grouper, snapper, and other seasonal fish.
- Inshore Fishing: Calm bays and flats near the harbor are perfect for inshore fishing. Guides provide gear and expertise, making it easy even for beginners.
- Bay or Lagoon Boat Rentals: You can rent small boats or kayaks (with layers to stay warm) to explore Choctawhatchee Bay or nearby coastal waters.
Other Must-Do Experiences
- Scenic Drives: Drive along Highway 98 for beautiful views of the Gulf Coast, beaches, and surrounding towns.
- Crab Island (Boat Access): Even if the water is too cold to swim, a short boat tour to Crab Island is scenic and fun to see the unique shallow sandbars and anchored boats.
- Local Eateries and Seafood: Enjoy fresh Gulf seafood at places like Dewey Destin’s, The Back Porch, or Harbor Docks. February is perfect for quiet dining without the summer crowds.
Tips:
- Dress in layers — February mornings and evenings can be cool, but afternoons are usually mild.
- Book dolphin or fishing tours in advance — operators run all year, but limited winter schedules mean availability may be tighter.
- Check sunrise/sunset times — Destin’s winter light is beautiful for photography along the beaches and harbor.
Even if you can’t swim, Destin offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, watch wildlife, and experience the Gulf Coast’s charm in a peaceful winter setting.
